Thanks for you understanding, that was my point.
Besides, a 7800 series regulator also provides a clean current.
Others, like dc converters or cheap switching psus, cause noise sometimes (the better ones are okay).
Yes, I know, I know, you can fix this with a cap here and there.
But a good psu is absolutely worth its money (like a usual CB radio power supply).
However, I better shut up now. I know how religious some people are about power effiency, switch-mode psus and solid-state technology:
Some time ago when I visited an electronics store and asked for a tube socket and a variable conductor, they almost kicked me out.. 😒
And you should have seen their eyes, when I asked them which other shop would sell that stuff if not them.
The irony is, vacuum tubes are about to come back into fashion. Both in audio amplifiers and computer technology (nano tubes).

There will always be jerks. To me, tubes are neat, but I can't see myself using them.

We are talking about an external usb floppy drive here. The old parts are going to be much more tolerant of bad power than newer devices. Anyway, I've beaten the horse enough by this point.

I do want one of these usb adaptors. TWO actually. One for 1.2mb and the other for 360kb drives. I assume they only work with one drive at a time.

On a completely different note, I wonder how hard it would be to just make one ourselves? I can't imagine an small fpga couldn't handle a floppy drive interface.

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

Thanks for your understanding. (^_^)
Other people often get mad about me because I'm such an oddball at some point.
For example, I'm fascinated also by 70's tech (I even have an old RadioShack catalogue in my collection)
and like big old casings (like big AT towers) or vintage radios (and old music from hat time).

Bye the way, I've forgot another possibility.
Some USB-IDE adapters also include a power supply with a molex connector!
I don't know of that power output is sufficient, but here's a picture.
