Still trying to decide on the sound card combo. I'm thinking maybe AWE64 + Diamond Monster Sound + Roland SCC-1?

The Roland SCC-1 only makes sense if you're going to be playing a lot of DOS games on that system. Otherwise, it's wasted there, as very few Win9x games from that time period still used MIDI music. And those that did were often tailored to AWE cards (e.g. Final Fantasy 7).

The AWE64 is a fine overall choice for that system, though the Monster Sound would bring A3D 1.0 support to games which can utilize it (e.g. Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight).

PC#1: Pentium MMX 166 / Soyo SY-5BT / S3 Trio64V+ / Voodoo1 / YMF719 / AWE64 Gold / SC-155
PC#2: AthlonXP 2100+ / ECS K7VTA3 / Voodoo3 / Audigy2 / Vortex2
PC#3: Core 2 Duo E8600 / Foxconn P35AX-S / X800 / Audigy2 ZS
PC#4: i5-3570K / MSI Z77A-G43 / GTX 970 / X-Fi

There are a enough mid to late 90s DOS games that it's worth supporting, including ones that support both 3D acceleration and General MIDI (e.g. Whiplash aka Fatal Racing). So I think having proper GM support will probably be worth it.

After thinking on it, I also might try the Roland RAP-10 in lieu of the SCC-1. Most game support for the RAP-10 seems to be from 1995 to 1996, seems like it might fit for the approximate time period I'm going for with this build.

The RAP-10 doesn't have intelligent mode MPU support, but I figure that's less of a concern for this build.

There's a few other non-FF7 midi 3d accel'd games too, can think of Montezuma's Return, Extreme Assault, Hexen II, and Jetfighter Full Burn

Blood comes to mind as well, with the 3Dfx Voodoo 1 patch.
