Well just loaded up GMFCore (MVE video codec) and played the Fallout 1 intro video in Media Player Classic. (Winamp video was garbled). According to Media Player Classic the resolution is 432x320. Could this be a resolution issue?

thanks again dosfreak

i will try the link, convert the videos to 16bit and reincorporate them into the .dat. unfortunately i'm pretty busy at the moment (the company i work for just got sold so it's play the funny hang on for the old job or look for a new one game for me right now ...) so not too much time to play around 😢

but i will post updates here as soon as i find some time to work on this further ...

Noticed last night that although the video res is 432x...when you play the game the video size is much lower. It looks even lower than 432x....even if the game is running in 640x480.... If it is playing the video in a 640x480 window then modifying the videos will probably have no effect......but I guess it's better to try than not at all.

If you're running the game at 640x480 and the video is 432x320, then the video is only going to take up 67.5% of the width of the screen and 50% of the height. Well, unless it stretches the video, but I'm guessing that would take too much processing power for games of that era.

Now that you mention it, I do seem to remember the movies being pretty small as far as visual size. Maybe there are black borders encoded in the movies and they aren't using the whole 432x320? I haven't looked at them in a while though.
