5160s don't have onboard IDE but I have seen a lot of later Turbo XT clones with IDE on board, along with a full whack of i/o and even video. There are also some 8 Bit IDE cards, but they are nowhere near common.

I have 286 boards with onboard IDE but never owned an XT board with them. You never know, I hunted 286 boards and 5.25 drives for over 5 years only to end up with multiple of them in a few months. Hopefully, I'll come across some 😀

Seems like I was to impatient removing the original Intel heat sink on the one and pinched a corner of the core ...

No POST with that, either alone or with the other one, which boots fine by it self.

Well, at least the 1 GiB of memory I threw in the other day still works as a charm, the same for the 2 667s it had already (all though I havent changed the clock generator to a 133 MHz capable one yet, so only 500 MHz) That POST screen is very enjoyable still 😀

[Edit]: It's not merely dust on the screen, it's physical antiaaliasing 🤣

This is why I'm terrified to attach a heatsink to any of my PIII Coppermine processors.

I feel like we could make a thread for all of our oopsies. A couple of years ago I bought a Fujitsu Stylistic Tablet and cracked the screen before I even brought it home. After I picked it up, I noticed that the box I was given didn't have the floppy drive that was mentioned in the ad. To doublecheck, I took the tablet out and left it on my armrest while I dug through the parts in the box. Absentmindedly, I leaned my elbow on the tablet and cracked the screen while digging through the box. I'm still butt hurt over that.

The thing is - I remembered them more sturdy, but apparently no. Probably tilted the heat sink too much in the process. Stupid thing is that I did it to get an easier to remove heat sink on it (and bigger to fit my 120mm to dual slot 1 fan adapter)

You've seen a lot of XTs with on-board IDE? Could you share some of them? Integrated COMs/LPT/floppy/video yes, it's not uncommon.

Thanks, at least I got it at a reasonable price (bought 2 800EBs for the heatsinks and the 1000/100 for a total of DKK 300 ~ US$45) but still ... :'(

That's exactly what I was thinking, XTs don't have on board IDE and don't take 16-bit ISA cards. Unless this Turbo XT is some modern clone that I'm not aware of, for me it always meant "just faster than 4.77MHz".

You can get away with a 16-bit I/O controller on an XT if the plan is to use a CompactFlash card rather than an IDE HDD.

I've got a 16-bit I/O controller in my XT 5160, with a CF-IDE adapter and it works fine. Setting it up can be hit and miss though, I tried 3 different I/O controllers, 2 of them worked and the other didn't. Then it's also picky with what CompactFlash cards it will support, I stuck with several lower capacity cards and it wouldn't work with a 64MB card but did work fine with both a 128MB & a 256MB.

I damaged some of the ceramic capacitors on a Slot 1 Pentium 3 when removing the stock heatsink. Look closely to see if there is any damage to these components, as this is repairable.

What value SMD capacitors to repair this Slot 1 Pentium 3 CPU?

I guess it felt like a "lot" early 90s when 386 was entry level in the first world and there were still newly built XT boards/systems that some importers were desperately trying to sell at bargain basement prices when they were competing with 10 years worth of used systems that everyone else was dumping to get 386 and 486.

There are about 20 boards that are easy to pull up on retroweb by specifying IDE and 8088, 8086, 80186, but it still feels like there are a bunch missing, they are maybe on there, but have V30, V40 etc and hard to arrange the right allowed search terms to pop them out. I am thinking there are a few unique ones when you search IDE and various numbers of 8 bit slots but as that number of slots gets low there is more "pollution" from 2/3/486 boards.

I had a look at theretroweb and I see what you mean now, all of these have the 8-bit IDE/XTA (of course, how could they possibly have ATA). You are right then, those do exist but I don't think that's what appiah4 had in mind with his ROM card.

Good point, I'll definitely double check that, thanks! However, the core is visually cracked, so not getting my hopes up too much ... 😉

I wonder how close the functional die get to the corner. I've seen lots of these chips with chipped corners with no problems.

I also had the unfortunate experience of ripping a die completely off of the PCB carrier. Be careful when pulling "up" on the processor when it's a direct contact.
