Athlon 64 is off to a good start: leading across all resolutions and settings it scores the first victory! In all tests with sound the impact on Athlon XP is actually higher than on Athlon 64 despite the XP having sound storm on its side!
Also note that at 1600*1200 we are witnessing a GPU bottleneck and that is with a 7800gs! I wonder how a geforce4 TI4200, a very popular card for Windows 98 builds would fare in directx8 games?? - hint: terrible!!
9. We switch to Aquamark3, a DirectX9 benchmark that implements proper hardware sound. Maybe nvidia with sound storm can help a little bit more the XP 3200 this time around!
First is the standard test with default settings:
A. Athlon XP 3200
B. Athlon 64 3200
10. We stay at 1024*768 - max settings and with sound enabled:
A. Athlon XP 3200
B. Athlon 64 3200
11. Now we go up to 1280*1024 max details; without sound the first time:
A. Athlon XP 3200
B. Athlon 64 3200
12. ... and with sound:
A. Athlon XP 3200
B. Athlon 64 3200
13. It seems Athlon XP can't catch a break! Despite having a dedicated onboard solution for processing the sound in hardware equivalent to Creative live it lags behind Athlon 64 by quite a bit! Sound storm does not help Athlon XP to lower the difference between it and Athlon 64!
1600*1200 sound disabled:
A. Athlon XP 3200
B. Athlon 64 3200
14. final and most demanding settings: 1600*1200 sound enabled:
A. Athlon XP 3200
B. Athlon 64 3200
Excellent performance by the Athlon 64 3200 Venice enables the K8 to score a clear victory in Aquamark3.
