I realise I'm late and haven't read the whole thread, but I got nfs porsche 2000 running on w10 via the nvidia voodoo wrapper whose name I forget right now.

Nvidia Voodoo wrapper? I guess you mean 3Dfx Voodoo wrapper

Well it worked for me on Win 10. How I achieved it:

Install NFSSE in C: directory of your main PC through DOSBox, that is files are located in C:\NFSSE

The dosbox code will be
mount c c:\

CD is mounted in the same drive as DOSBox.
My code was
mount L L:\-t cdrom(Substite L with the drive later where your cd is inserted in both mount and partition letter)

Use the same drive letter as in your PC to mount it in DOSBox(THIS WAS MY MISTAKE, I WENT TO EDIT PATHS.CFG)

Copy NFS WIN exe and Iforce dll and paste in nfsse directory. Rename NFS Win to nfs. Exe

Edit nfs.cfg and change the file starting which is usuallg SB16 in dosbox and change it to YESSOUND.

Use these compatibility fixes
EmulateCDFS
EmulateJoystick
IgnoreException
IgnoreScheduler
RemoveReadOnlyAttribute

copy dplay.dll from redist folder of game cd in case the dplay.dll from syswow64 gives ordinal error.

Run dxwnd and import the settings
https://sourceforge.net/p/dxwnd/discussion/ge … 0Speed%20SE.dxw

Change your game exe location dxwnd.

After you open the game, you may get some error relating to dserial like dpwsock and dpserial cant be loaded. Click ok on both cases. Your game will work

If you are in full screen mode and gane freezes on black screen, click windoes button and click ok on both msgs and get in the game from taskbar.

I hope this works for you. After 5 years I finally did this

You might also get errors relating to RGB. If that happens, click ok and retry to start the game until it doesn't shoe this msg and you get the. Dpwsock or dpserial msg.

This should work on all other OS

I came here to say that I cannot get the windows version to work without emulating a full windows (performance is pretty bad though).
However the DOS version I got it working (with some hitches and the occasional audio crackling)

Anyway, I used dosbox-x, because this is the one where I could keep the original aspect ratio without stretching.
And best of all, I can just launch it with a simple double click and it works!
I created a batch file to call dosbox-x with the custom config file which contains the necessary autoexec actions to start the game instantly.

As for the windows version, I've tried everything, and I cannot get the windows version to work unless I emulate a full windows environment. And no dxwnd didn't work for me, the game doesn't start and there are no errors...

So if someone has it working simply, and I mean with a double click and it launches (no further clicks needed), i'd like to know exactly what to do to make it happen.

Dosbox is fine if you dont want to play with a force feedback wheel. I wish someone would make some sort of modern patch for the game, to run at high res and widescreen aspect, as its the only game in the series stuck at 640x480, even nfs 2 has a modern patch and can run in 4K

Did you try this EXE

I don't think it's possible because it's not 3d engine used in nfs 1 and only software 2d engine and doesn't use direct3d. Windows version use directdraw.
NFS 2 is th first NFS that use 3d engine in software and glide.

It's the problem with all 2d engine and software engine even for 3d engine, modify resolution is difficult. A wrapper can't make it.

I wouldn't mind a updated guide for this game and NFS2SE to run on modern windows, Hot Pursuit 1 is its own can of worms

If you guys want to play the original NFS on modern Windows in high resolution, why not try the PSX version through something like Duckstation? You can basically set any render resolution you like and play with a USB steering wheel.

Because there are version differences between PC and PSX. Not to mention, only PC got the Special Edition of the game with extra tracks.

I've always been curious as to what exactly breaks TNFS SE on newer systems, since its one of the pickiest games I've played that fatal crashes on start on pretty much all my win98 PCs and Ive only had success playing it fine on socket 7 win95 builds. So I finally got arond to using my hardware and driver collection to do extensive compatibility testing, and, its pretty surprising where the limits lie.

So. Win95 not needed, works fine on Win98SE. Software components like DX 9.0c are not a problem. CPU speed is not a problem - went up to P4 2.0 and game still runs fine. Ram capacity seems to not be a problem - went up to 1gb with patchmem, game still ran fine.

Sound cards - Anything ISA works, when moving to PCI seems like only Creative cards work fine. Went up to Audigy with no issues to report. Other sound card brands and onboard audio however result in really bad crackly sound quality. Not outright crash the game but sound horrible.

Graphics cards - this is where the true bottleneck lies:
S3 Virge DX - works fine;
Matrox G450 - works fine;
3dfx Voodoo3 3000 - fatal crash on start (with driver 1.07, coudn't be bothered to try older driver)
ATi 3D Rage Pro PCI - works fine
ATi Radeon (any model) - fatal crash on start. Any driver version
Nvidia Riva 128ZX, TNT, TNT2, GF256, GF2, GF3 - works fine up to detonator 8.05. Any higher and fatal crash on start

So, yeah, turned out can go higher than I thought it would go. But I have no idea why its crashing with newer cards/drivers when its supposed to use a software renderer and not touch 3d hw accel.
