Congrats there, now to go for the bigger guns (Quantum3D) 😀

By the way, Artex, have you ever considered opening a retro museum with all the glorious mint/sealed stuff you own? 🤣

Hah - I've thought about doing something. The problem is that this is kind of a niche hobby. If all the VOGONS members lived locally here, then maybe it would make more sense.

I just looked and there's 96 listings for a 486 DX2-66 on ebay.. none of those would work?

Loot at the bright side: you'll probably have an easier time with VLB cards now.

Luckily it overclocks to 50MHz quite comfortably! Ever since I read about the VLB + 50MHz = fast but unstable system, I took it as a personal challenge. I'm going in!

You'll eventually have to hire armed security. Last night I dreamt of burrowing a tunnel into your basement and grabbing wildly at your stuff under the cover of night. Dark for the dark business! ©

Personally, I'd take it all out of the box, use it intensely and then put it back just to annoy him. It should be illegal to waste what is probably perfectly functional hardware like that, you may as well recycle it if you aren't going to use it.

That's actually not a bad idea. I know some members already have sites showcasing their collections, but imagine how comprehensive a collection we could create by having a Wiki-style site where anyone (edit: members) can upload their pictures and info! Just look at Phil's video benchmark. I'm pretty sure some of us have unique or largely undocumented devices / systems / upgrades - it would be an almost comprehensive online museum, with all the physical pieces distributed around the globe (30% of them being in Artex's basement) 😉

Bought a Powermac 7100/66 and assorted Mac bits (monitor, Laserwriter, Stylewriter, external SCSI drive, tons of software) today, had the pleasure of discovering a few extra pieces in the mix - a few Intel CPUs (P5-90, P5-133), AMD DX4/100 and K5-PR100, and a TI 486DX2-80, as well as some 72-pin EDO and SDRAM. Have heard of the DX2/80, guessing not all motherboards support it?

If your motherboard can give the voltage it will usually work. Some boards don't like running the Write Back cache properly but they usually work in Write Thru mode so far as I am aware, Cyrix did weird things with that. Some boards (Usually with an Intel chipset) max out on a 33MHz BUS but if they are providing the correct voltage the CPU will still run, just at 66MHz. It may even run at 3,3V instead of 3,45V at the lower clock speed but I have never tried.

The short answer is that, yes some boards do not support it directly. But almost any 486DX motherboard providing the correct voltage will run it at least reasonably.

Hey HighTreason. First, hope the move went well and that things are better moving forward (I subscribe to your YouTube Channel). Second, I respect your opinion here and I think lots of people would be on your side in this argument. That being said, I do have a ton of non-boxed hardware that does get used (check out my 'Artex's Build of the Week' threads), albeit more rarely now that my wife and I recently celebrated the birth of our little girl. As I've reiterated before, there is something to say for the pure 'collector' side of things too, and for me (and I'm sure others too), it's the nostalgia aspect - simply 'looking' at these items in their original boxes "brings me back," if only for a little bit, to the time when I was younger and all this stuff was new and up & coming. It's kinda like Christmas, especially because a lot of this stuff was on my "want" list but never could afford back in the day. But again, I do get your point and I think some people just won't see it the way I do.

Well, That didn't work...

^This is me.

Move is still on-going. Still fighting to get the locks changed and am hoping that recent burglaries and the letters that were put through everyone's door by the police about said burglaries might speed things up a bit. Plus it seems someone has broken my lock around the same time the neighbors had their stuff stolen. Seems like I am moving into a wonderful neighborhood.

As for collecting, in reality... Meh, it isn't my stuff, so you can do what you want with it. If putting it up on a shelf works for you then that's fine, power to you. As for me, if I have more than one of something boxed, I leave one boxed if I think it is worth keeping that way unless I have an immediate use for it. If I only have one of something, then it must be opened and put to use or else I wouldn't have bought it in the first place. It is probably worth my time to add that I don't seek boxed hardware for these reasons, plus it costs too much, so I only ever get it as a last resort. I buy games boxed but not sealed, those rarely come out of the box though as I usually use backups instead, the box and everything is there for completion sake, that and because I simply like the look of the box so I do understand your point of view to a certain extent.

Do up something like vgamuseum.info - vogonsmuseum?

I think this is a lovely idea!

The only problem is that I don't have a good camera anymore, but I'd be fully willing to help out (I'd have to see when I have the time though).
I've posted a lot of pics on the Vogons wiki (which I'd never done before, the quality demands are of course higher then simple house and kitchen pics 😜 ) and I'd be willing to dig around my collection to at the least fill in the blancs 😀

Maybe it would be a good idea to split the posts regarding an online museum to a new thread?

I have no issue with people having an item and leaving it in the box (although I always feel it's a shame), but seeing lots of the same thing boxed in one person's hands? That annoys me a bit, because it inflates prices and keeps people like me, with very limited funds, from getting some of the nicer stuff. I'd never leave a functional card in the box if I had something to put it in, unless it was specifically being kept as a spare. Certainly, I'd not be interested in leaving things sealed (and indeed have bought NIB games for cheap before and unsealed them to play.)

I don't see how it makes any difference in cost to you, what he does with the stuff surely makes no odds to that? I kinda figure that as long as it's not going to the gold crusher or landfill it's all good. And if it makes the chap happy then who are we to judge?

That I go with as well.... There are really a lot of reasons, why I partially agree on you all on this,
The only outcome on this, is when all those cards hit the market (once the owner is dead or for some reason does not want them anymore), the prices are going down like crazy. Wich is a lesson to learn for those who are pushing the prises up, only to make money. You all know. Those that only see retro hardware as a sort of money machine.

The 3dfx community has a lot of people that just collect old 3dfx cards and never use them. Its why so many 3dfx cards are hard to find and costly.

I like the museum idea and I know a lot of peple in the 3dfx community wtich would likly be on board with it. Just look at thedodgegarage.com/3dfx/ its far more emtre then is used to be. and thats all run by one guy.

Some of the biggest collection have been broken up and sold sadly. Edmundoab sold everything he had aways back.
You can find more photos like the ones I posed here http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/v/3dfx_collectors/
