This will be a continued log of my retro computer systems that I acquire and benchmarks, issues I have come across with the systems. For my first posts, I will be listing the Intel system followed by the AMD systems. If there are any benchmarks you would like me to run on a certain system, please ask and I will try and run those benchmarks.

Some of the systems didn't have hard drives when I acquired them, which is too bad as I always like seeing what was on the system, how long it was run for. On the other side of that though, people need to learn to remove all person files/data from hard drives before they sell or donate their old computers.

Gateway 2000 GP6-400

-> Intel Pentium II 400MHz, slot 1
-> 384MB SD-RAM PC-100
-> ATI Rage 128GL AGP 16MB, DirectX 6.0 Video Card
-> 14.4 GB IBM Deskstar 14GXP 7200RPM IDE
-> Plextor PX-32TSi SCSI CD-ROM
-> Plextor PX-W2410A 24x10x40x CD-RW IDE. Unfortunently someone painted the front of it black
-> Adaptec SCSI PCI card
-> Integrated Ensoniq ES1371 (Creative SB PCI128)

-> Windows 98 Second Edition

PC didn't come with a hard drive, so I installed the 14.4GB IBM hard drive that I had. I do have a small handful of games installed on this ystem (ie: Marble Drop)

Benchmarks I have run;

3DMark99 -> 3,111; CPU: 3,816
3DMark2000 -> 1,219

Dell Dimension XPS T700R

-> Intel Pentium III 700/256K/100, slot 1
-> 384MB SD-RAM PC-100
-> ATI Rage 128 Pro AGP 16MB, DirectX 6.0 Video Card
-> 80GB Seagate Barracude 7200.7 7200RPM IDE, connected to Promise ATA66 card

-> TDK 24x/10x/40 CD-RW, IDE
-> 100MB IDE Zip Drive
-> Promise ATA66 PCI IDE Card
-> Turtle Beach A Vortex 2 Sound Card

-> Windows ME

PC didn't come with a hard drive, so I installed the 80GB. Hopefully I can find a more period correct one to put into the system. I had tried installing 98SE, but would get windows protection errors, so I settled on ME, plus the case had a ME COA on it, so felt it was a good fit.

Benchmarks I have run;

3DMark99 -> 5,626; CPU: 10,629
3DMark2000 -> 2,338
3DMark2001SE -> 363

-> 20GB Maxtor HDD
-> LG 8x/4x/32 CD-RW, IDE
-> Sound Blaster Live! Value

Custom Built System from 2001

-> Intel Pentium 4 1.8GHz/512K/400, Willamette, socket 478
-> 512MB PC133 SDRAM
-> Beige Midtower case
-> Gigabyte GA-8IDX Socket 478 Motherboard
-> Gainward GeForce 3 AGP 64MB, DirectX 8.0 Video Card
-> 40GB Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 7200RPM Main, IDE
-> 13GB Quantum FireBall 5400RPM Secondary, IDE
-> LG 52X CD-ROM, IDE
-> LG 16x10x40x CD-RW, IDE
-> Integrated Sound

-> Windows XP Home, SP2

PC came with the hard drives. This system has the original install from Nov 22, 2001. Checking the logs, this system was only used for just under 3 years before they retired it. The last time the system ran before I got it was Sept 25, 2004. The original CD-ROM was dead as a disc had exploded in it. I want to get a replacement as close as possible to this drive. The system had some games on it, lots of demo's and other things. Uninstalled quite a bit of stuff so I could install my benchmarks. as the hard drives were pretty full. The motherboard does have 3 cap's that need to be replaced, but ran rock solid while I was benchmarking the system and cleaning it up.

Benchmarks I have run;

3DMark2001SE -> 6,275
3DMark03 -> 932

PCMark02 -> CPU: 4,290; Mem: 2,634; HDD: 442

Dell XPS 630i from around 2008

-> Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, 2x4MB L2, 1066 FSB, LGA 775
-> 3GB DDR2-533 DDR2-RAM, Dual Channel
-> GeForce 8800GT 512MB PCI-E SLI, DirectX 10.0 Video Card
-> 120GB AData SSD SATA
-> DVD Burner
=> Integrated Sound

-> Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit

PC came without the hard drive. This system originally came with Windows XP Pro looking at the COA and the build sheet from the service tag. I tried installing XP, but kept running into blue screens. I found a restore DVD and installed Vista Ultimate as I had never used Vista when it came out. Of course, like most of these Dell's from the era, I only have 3 of the case LED's working out of the original 9. I am hoping that I can find original modules that still have working LED's. Also going to replace the 120GB AData SSD with a 500GB SSD

Benchmarks I have run;

3DMark03 -> 51,762
3DMark05 -> 14,957
3DMark06 -> 11,822 [SM2: 4,505; SM3: 5,788; CPU: 3,240]
3DMark Vantage -> P7,949 [GPU: 7,786; CPU: 8,481]

PCMark04 -> Couldn't get to run, said I need Windows Media Player 9, but Vista had Media Player 11
PCMark05 -> CPU: 7,664; Mem: 3,661; HDD: 8,811; Grpahics: 13,696; Overall score: 9,704

Gateway Select 1000

-> AMD Athlon 1200MHz, Thunderbird, Socket A
-> 512MB PC133 SD-RAM
-> Abit KT7A-Raid Socket A motherboard
-> Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB 128-bit AGP, DirectX 9
-> 80GB Western Digital IDE HDD
-> Nec DV-5700A DVD-ROM
-> Lite-On LTR-40125S CD-RW
-> Sound Blaster Live! CT4870
-> USB 2.0 PCI card

-> Windows XP Pro SP3

PC came without the hard drive, of course. The original motherboard was no good, it kept having issues with memory, no matter which modules I used or what slot I stuck them in. Sometimes it would work fine for a day, then it would have memory issues. Replaced the motherboard with an Abit KT7A-Raid board. It also orginally had a 1GHz CPU, but replaced it with the 1.2GHz model I had sitting around.

Benchmarks I have run;

3DMark2000 -> 6,541
3DMark2001SE -> 6,574
3DMark03 -> 2,446

PCMark02 -> CPU: 3,001; Mem: 2,211; HDD: 828

Found this PC at a local Value Village. As soon as I saw it I had to pick it up, finding computers in the thrift stores is quite rare. Took it home, blew it out as it was very dusty. It looks like the hard drive was updated from the original 120GB to the 200GB Nov 30, 2006. The last time the system ran before I got it was April 27, 2011.

Benchmarks I have run;

3DMark2001SE -> 10,862
3DMark03 -> 4,402

Custom built system

-> AMD Athlon XP 2500+, Socket A
-> 2GB DDR400 Dual Channel
-> Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro2 Rev1.0
-> Radeon X800 XL 256MB AGP, DirectX 9
-> 160GB Western Digital IDE HDD
-> LG GH22LS30 DVD-Burner
-> Sound Blaster Audigy SB1394 (SB0090)

-> Windows XP Pro SP3

This computer is a rebuild of what I had back in 2003/2004. The case is my original case, which has actually been with 2 other family members. I had the original motherboard sticker in the case and I had found my original listing from when I was trying to sell my PC. I rebuilt my system and will never get rid of this case again. I played so many hours on this system, took it school to show off in my computer class, even took it to a part time job I had, just to show it off.

Benchmarks I have run;

3DMark2000 -> 11,324
3DMark2001SE -> 13,795
3DMark03 -> 8,801

PCMark02 -> CPU: 5,605; Mem: 4,969; HDD: 1,225
PCMark04 -> CPU: 2,940; Mem: 2,161; HDD: 3,874; Grpahics: 5,583; Overall score: 2,994

I did have an Athlon 64 X2 4400+, socket 939 system, but the motherboard is no good. I could run for a little bit, do a restart and it wouldn't boot unless I shut it off then turned it back on, and it wasn't running stable. I really need to learn how to remove and reinstall caps on a motherboard so that I can recap this. The motherboard was a MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum Socket 939 with AGP. I had 2GB of DDR400, Radeon HD 3650 512MB gddr3, WD Raptor 150GB, Silver CoolerMaster Case, SB X-Fi XtrememGamer Fata1ty PCI w/64MB memory.

I would like to get that system back up and running and then also get an AM2 system as well.

Nice systems you got there.

The K8N Neo2 has RoHS solder, it can be a pain to recap the board if you don't have soldering experience. You could try on a much older mainboard first, preferably a dead one. 😉

I have a 1400 Thunderbird with a 9600 XT and a 1400 P3-S with a 9600 XT. Both machines get around 3400 in 3DMark03. Curious to know what graphics driver you are using and what 3DMark03 settings?

Sorry about that, my mistake. That was the score from a different system. I just ran it on the Thunderbird system and got a score of 2,446. I do all tests but the sound test. Looking at the system info in 3DMark, it says I am running driver version 6.14.10.6462, driver date of 3-23-2004

These are lots of Radeon 9x00 waiting to die! I really liked these Chieftech(?) cases that you have on the last system! I had a green one; they look so huge compared to modern day standards.

Searching a Nexgen Nx586 with FPU, PM me if you have one. I have some Athlon MP systems and cookies.
