I downloaded dosbox, everything was working as it should, but then somehow I utterly, mysteriously and idiotically screwed up and now all my executable files are automatically opened by dosbox, or rather, dosbox fails to open them. This entails me being unable to run basically any program anymore on my pc.
I checked the control panel -> default programs -> set associations list to see whether the .exe extension was linked to the dosbox program, but it isn't even mentioned in that extensions list.
How can I solve this crippling problem without opening a .exe file?

well i doubt that dosbox replaced the default association. To be honest i have no clue how i would have code that 😀
But it is a tricky problem. Isn't there some hint if you rightclick on an executable ?

well that's the point, the .exe association is the only one not available on the list.. , that is, if you meant the list I stated in my first post.
right-clicking an exe-file also doesn't give any clues except for "open".
uninstalling dosbox is also no option, since that requires opening uninstall.exe

Maybe search on some anti-virus forums about this problem and how to
fix it, some virii intercept execution of files using this technique.

Basically it's changing the registry key HKCR\exefile\shell\open\command
(which should be a SZ and in your case contain something with dosbox
in it) back to "%1" %*
(meaning execute the to-open file with all parameters).

It should be noted that this is NOT caused by dosbox by any means, either you
or some non-dosbox related component screwed up your file associations.

so if the dosbox did not replace the default thing, then what do you think did happen?
i made a printscreen of what it looks like when i try to open windows media player, check it out and see if you could please explain to me what's going on.

😦

Well no idea how that can happen, i've only encountered this once on some
seriously virus-infected pc, and took me quite a while to figure out what's
going on and how to correct it.
(in the end the pc got a new installation, but that's a different story 😀 ).

well i am protected against viruses, but my pc wasnt protected against the most malicious entity, being myself. After i tackle this issue, i will search for an anti-idiot firewall 😦
some anti-virus pimp got me a fix, so i suppose i wont need to do anything drastic like reinstalling. Thanks for your help 😀
