Anyway, the three systems are checked out. The first is sold to a friend, Whole box. turns out it was a pentium 166. 512kb cache. soundblaster 16, with special cd drive. Its making a cross country trip starting tomorrow.

system #2 was a Cyrix 166 PR Had a nice opti 82c924 sound-card that supports all the old cd drive connections. I'm probably going to toss this card into a Compaq 486 and offload it on craigslist. The motherboard I still have. its a biostar 8500tvx. Nothing too special for socket 7. comes with 512kb cache and a onboard ps/2 header. i'll probably toss the board on ebay for $5 bid and see what happens.

system #3 was caked with dust. all that was salvageable were the floppy drives, the case itself and the cpu. The motherboard was a pentium FAKE CACHE board. It was "upgraded" with a 256kb coast card. I tossed this board into my pcb scrap pile. It had a 1996 bios, but was not Y2k ready. /facepalm

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

I must report that this adapter works PERFECT.
CTMOUSE reports the mouse as a "Microsoft mode" one and everything I tried worked fine, no lag - no input delay whatsoever. The green led also flickers when there is mouse activity 🤣
I don't know if "microsoft mode" has problems with any games/apps but I don't see why...
So basically if one sees a "RARITAN CONVERTER FOR SERIAL MOUSE" "Serial Port to PS/2 Mouse Converter for MasterConsole" grab it if the price is nice 😉

^ only if the devices also support the ps2 protocol... pure usb devices won't work (same thing with serial->ps2 adapters that don't have an ic inside, the device must support both protocols)

Been a while since I last bought some retro hardware.

Today I was lucky and bought 3 white non-yellowed DVD drives (and a DVI cable), the drives were only €3 each (the cable was only like €1 or so). They had more (it was a thrift store you call it in English? A second-hand store) but those were yellowed.

It'll get harder to find white DVD drives in the future and for this price I just couldn't not buy them 😁
The drives are kinda old, manufactured around 2003/2004 and will look very nice in a white/beige computer case 😁

Thanks for the tip on the raritan adapter. I managed to find one on amazon, but I paid about twice what you did (about 35 after shipping). Still a good deal in my opinion though. Now I don't have to bother with finding a 486 board with PS/2 ports. Can't wait to try this out on my XT.

*update*-shit. order was cancelled by seller (apparently out of stock). Found another one at a better price though.

Haven't had a chance to play with them yet due to lack of time.

Will also need to build a ribbon cable for the NEC wavetable board.

Because another computer is just exactly what I needed...

I saw the auction with about 2 minutes left, and it wasn't getting much interest, so just for shits and giggles I threw in a bid without any real expectations of winning it. I didn't get it super cheap, $48 with shipping, but it's a lot less than they usually go for. Aside from a desperate need for a peroxide bath, it looks to be in pretty good shape. Functional condition is unknown, but most of the common issues with these things don't seem to be too hard to solve anyway.

How, good/bad is that Yamaha ISA card? I can get one for 2p but by looking at it I always thought it was poo, tho I never actually used one.

I heard good things but haven't tried it yet. Will definitely do a little writeup once I get around to it.

I use an audician 32 in my 486. When configured correctly you get very clean output, bug-free MIDI port, real OPL3 and excellent SB pro compatibility. The only game it has problems with to my knowledge is duke nukem 2 which doesn't play all sounds correctly.

The only other fault of this card is that it's too short to mount s full size midi daughterboard, but you can use a cable if you are really keen.

I was cleaning out my storage locker and brought home a couple of boxes full of stuff and found some of the following more interesting items:

Leadtek WinFast Geforce 2 GTS AGP
STB Velocity 128 PCI
3com ELII/16TP, 16-bit ISA NIC (only has the RJ45 and AUI connectors, no BNC)

Creative Labs Audigy SB0090 Model with the External I/O Bracket and external controller box/unit

And a couple of SATA 2 IDE Interface Adapters.

I know I was going to use SATA HDD's in older machines but never got around to testing them out.

No matter where you go, there you are...

That's one of the cool things about the CMI8330/AV-310. The Daughterboard header is near the ISA connector, and "upside down", so the daughterboard can be arbitrarily large. Strangely considerate design for an ISA-era device!
