Hi Guys,

I'm running Dosbox .72 on OS X 10.5.2. I'm using a 2.4ghz Macbook with the Intel GMA X3100 integrated graphics.

I've got Command & Conquer Red Alert installed and running. Everything is really smooth, frame rates are really high, animated videos play perfectly, sound working exactly like it should.

The only problem is, that if I start to play, the video screws up. The map is solid black (like the fog of war is covering everything), I can see my starting units on top of it, but if I click one of the units and tell it to move, the image is all screwed up. I have attached a screenshot of the problem to this post. (You'll see that I tried to drag-select multiple units and that I told the guy on the left to move south.)

I have messed around with all kinds of video settings; I've tried OpenGL, OpenGLnb, surface, overlay, etc. I've turned off scaling, too. Nothing seems to solve this problem.

Here's the kicker: The game plays perfectly on my old 1.5 Ghz PowerBook g4 with a Nvidia 64mb GeforceGo graphics card. The only trouble is that the PowerBook is too slow when you get into a huge melee battle -- it's pretty much unplayable. I need the game to work on my new 2.4 dual core!

Any help would be great!

I don't know how well Intel graphics cards do on OSX but I know on Windows machines that I've had no end of issues with graphics related problems....

Are you sure that when you switch output= to a different value that it is using that value?

Yes. I'm sure it's using the new setting.

And I was afraid the answer would be, "The integrated graphics won't work, you need a dedicated video card."

That's a real shame because the GMA X3100 in my new MacBook is actually a more powerful graphics adaptor than the discreet NVidia GeForceGO in my old PowerBook. The MacBook runs the game flawlessly... until you try to move units or interact with the map.

Anyone out there had success getting integrated graphics to work with Red Alert? What settings did you use?

How do you know?

I'm no Mac user, so i can't really help with the issue. But i think it's strange that most of the screen in your shot looks OK, but only the playfield has that "Tron"-look to it. I think (but that's only a guess) that if the problem was related to DOSBox' output method (or DOSBox at all), the whole screen should be "broken".

Did you have OS X on your old notebook, too? Did you already try to upgrade the graphics drivers on your new notebook? I'd also say you should reinstall the game, just to make sure the games's data is OK. Did you install the game from original media?

There are some other thing you could try. For example, trying DOSBox under Windows XP, or Linux (preferrably by booting these natively). You could also try to switch resolution/color depth of your desktop before starting DOSBox, or starting DOSBox in fullscreen mode (not switching from window to fullscreen _after_ starting DOSBox).

Hope this helps a bit in isolating the problem.

First, I know it's using the new setting because if I select "surface" or "overlay" as the output method, the DOSbox window shrinks down to really tiny size. Change the output method to "openGL" or "openGLnb" and the window opens at the size I specify in the preference file. (800x600) I've also tried setting the resolution to "original," but that had no effect.

Addict:

Yes, I had OS X on my old notebook too. It was an older version of OS X, however (Tiger 10.4.10 instead of Leopard 10.5.2, which I'm running now). The video drivers for my new notebook are the latest version.

Yes, I installed the game from original media: the same media that I installed it from on my old notebook when it worked perfectly. I agree that it's very strange that everything works perfectly except the play field.

I will definitely try lowering my screen resolution and color depth before starting DOSbox and see if that helps. I will report back.

Hi,

I had the same problem (MacBook Intel Core Duo 1.8GHz, runing Mac OS X Leopard). But it is now working ok! 😁 All that I did was to install the patch 1.08PE. Let me know if this also works for you.
