Got this Asus dual socket 8 system for free along with my Compaq Proliant 5000 because the seller accidently damaged it's front bezel when he packed the unit. for shipping.
It came with two 166mhz 512k Pentium Pro cpu's, 2.1gig IDE HDD, 40x IDE CD-ROM, Asus Symbios chip based UW SCSI controller, special Asus media bus ATI Mach64 gfx card combined with a Vibra 16C sound card, RTL 8139 NIC, 128mb EDO RAM
I've since the upgraded the system with these parts:
- 2 x Pentium Pro 1mb cache model
- 2x new old stock socket 8 heatsinks
- maxed out the RAM with 8x64mb 60ns EDO RAM to a total of 512mb
- Fujitsu Siemens 36.7gig 10k RPM 8mb cache U160 SCSI hard drive
- Yamaha SW60XG GM/XG Midi card
Planned upgrades are to hook up the cd-rom to the SCSI chain with an acard IDE--> UWSCSI adapter.
Install a Gravis Ultrasound Max sound card.
Instal a Voodoo 2 gfx card for some 3d game support 😀
Mkght install an UWSCSI Raid controller..and hook up two 36.7gig drives in RAID 0 but I think that would be overkill for this slow system.
Currently running Windows NT4 server and Windows 98SE in dual boot with Acronis OS Selector.
Mostly using this rig for newer DOS games...what I've noticed is that quite alot of games doesn't want to run on dual socket 8 systems...Pinball Fantasies is a prime example...runs flawlessly on my Soltek and Asus single socket 8 systems.
Some more pr0n pics from my setup 😁
