Yesterday I saw a video of a Doom 3 mod of the Original Doom. Got to say, after seeing this it doesn't really make me want to play the original version anymore...

Any link? Be interested to see that.

Classic Doom for D3 was always a big overhyped meh to me. They didn't remake the visceral feel the original had.

I actually had a similar idea to the OP's a while ago, though what I was aiming for was to make a competent Unreal Tournament/Quake 3 clone with a simplistic artstyle (reminiscent of Black Shades http://www.wolfire.com/black-shades ) that would run well on period hardware, along with integrating a few extra features, such as semi-customizable weapons loadouts, alterable physics, some game modes that aren't standard deathmatch/CTF, and the ability to add extra eye candy if you have a newer machine (similar to what some DooM sourceports offer).

The OA486 branch was going to be similar (OA with just rgbGen const for textures) but that never really got off the ground.

What I really meant by "period hardware" was like Pentium I/II-class machines that would be able to do flat-shaded low-poly graphics at a decent framerate and resolution while still leaving enough processing power for the game's other aspects (such as the networking, sound, physics, bots, etc.)

But yeah for the gameplay elements, I was basically thinking of taking some of my favorite elements from UT, Q3, Skulltag, Soldat, Perfect Dark, Halo, TF2, and CoD (primarily UT and Q3 though) and putting them into one game. In other words, it would mostly be oldschool, but it would have some more newschool elements as well.
