That's usually known as the "vga feature connector" or "vga passthrough". You can hook other things in there like a TIGA or 8514/A high resolution card. Those were used by professionals in the olden days before VGA cards integrated graphics accelerators. I think feature connectors were sometimes used for capture cards too.
I should also mention some feature connectors are input only, others are output only. Some can be configured as either. I believe most VGA cards without acceleration are output only.

Yes, this connector is required for all kinds of early video capture cards that render directly to the main isa graphics cards RAM. Later it was implemented as Pin-connector.
On late PCI, AGP cards you will find often the VESA Advanced Feature Connector AFC, that later cards like DVD decoder cards require. This one is f.e. on the Voodoo3 cards.
Ati had it's own extension called Ati Multimedia Channel (AMC) that is used on cards from Mach64VT to Rage Pro in combination with cards like Ati-TV f.e.

I've seen a 3rd kind of feature connector that existed between VGA and AMC. It used a really proprieary long plastic connector. I think I've mostly seen these on 1994-95ish number 9 and matrox cards. I think it was functionally similar to AMC but with an expensive connector.

thanks for the replies.
Another example this feature connector is used for is the Creative Labs 3DO Blaster.
You connect the 3DO Blaster to the VGA card's vesa feature connector to get the 3DO video signal to show up in the Win3.1 application.

Typical use was connecting mpeg1 acceleration cards. You need cable - got one card with it too. On top is video card, bottom is vga card....

As far as I can tell this connector came out around the time of the S3 968. It may have been developed by S3 itself, but I believe it was an open standard as I have seen in on other cards as well. The card above is a #9 FX 531.

It is the same connector as on the image with the Matrox impression.
I can't think of a reason why my site is blocked from china. Maybe I should add some Loongson hardware 😉.
