I'm trying to find the drivers for the controller on Windows 98, but to no avail. I lack the CD, and the ones I see either link to a dead MS page or are behind a paywall. (It just works in Windows 8 though.)

Have a look at the Microsoft Sidewinder Game Controller Software v3.02 for Win9x based operating systems that is on Vogons Drivers.
Here's the link: http://www.vogonsdrivers.com/getfile.php?file … &menustate=24,0
It says it's for the Precision Pro but, it's actually a driver package for all Sidewinder Game Controller models.

Maybe it also contains drivers for the Dual Strike

No dice, it just added a SideWinder 3D Pro to Game Controllers, which isn't connected. I think the driver is too old. It dates from 1998, but I believe this controller to be from 2000.

The 3.02 is apparently for GamePort devices, USB devices need SideWinder 4.0 software. I think the file is swv4.zip, but I can't find any download of it without spyware. I'll look at home if my Dual Strike came with a driver CD.

Microsoft did have a stand-alone piece of software available at one point:

As you can see, the filename is SWgcs-ds.zip .

Excellent, those are the drivers! However, I'd like to verify that it works in a VM before I pull out my 6x86. I get this after installation. Before it was just a HID device, so something happened:

If I try to add the device in the Game Controllers control panel, it just spits "the gameport or gameport drivers are not configured, consult device manager."

In the screenshot is clearly Windows 98. Windows 2000 is irrelevant here.

Sorry, my memory was bad 😉 Have you tried a clean 98 install on the VM and then attaching the SideWinder?

Good point, the VM's audio was being funny anyways. I'll reinstall when I get the chance.

Ok, fresh VM, it just does the same thing. I'll get out the physical machine and test.

Yeah, sorry for triple post, but it is happy on a physical machine. Getting used to it will be the fun part.
