Just got an original case from IBM, for model 5160 recently. It's empty, and came with no screws.

I thought that normal case screws would work, but it seems they are too small to get any grip. Was the PC screws 'standard' different in the 80s?

Yes. The original size was 8-32.
Modern case screws are 6-32. Same threads/inch but smaller diameter.

There is a kind of washer called "Fender Washer".
They are extra big around for the center hole size and usually a little thinner than other options.
(Just in case it helps.)
