I came across this desktop with an unknown 286 motherboard which has a 286/12MHz chip in a socket. The system has a B&W CRT monitor and only DOS and WordStar 2000 installed on its HDD. All diagnostics report the CPU to be 16MHz. I thought 286s are unstable when overclocked? Am I to expect issues when running something more "resource intensive"? Can its actual speed be configured with jumpers like on the 486 boards or do I have to replace some crystal?

Its controlled via oscillator - crystal. If it works then I see no problem running it at 16MHz - but do check the oscillator on board - it should be 32MHz.
