I recently acquired my brother's older ADSL router (the D-Link 2750U), since my previous one (a D-Link DSL-2640U) was starting to exhibit strange behaviour (dropped connections, slow upload speed, etc.). Apparently, so I've been told, these routers have a certain lifespan and then they start to slowly stop functioning.
Everything seems to work fine with the DSL-2750U, except that as soon as I re-connect any LAN connection to the router, the Wi-Fi stop responding, necessitating me to restart the router.

To elaborate:
My main PC and my printer is connected via a LAN cable to the router.
I have a couple of wireless devices (mostly two cell phones, my printer as well as a Wi-Fi range extender) connected via Wi-Fi to the router.
Everything connects fine and is working without problems, but as soon as I power down my main PC (that is connected via a LAN cable) and power it up again, my Wi-Fi connection "freezes" up.
If I disconnect any of my wireless devices and try to reconnect, then I just get an error message of either "Cannot obtain IP address" or "Wireless connection to XXX did not respond".

I've been in contact with the support desk of D-Link.
They have suggested changing the channel, which had no impact.
I've tried to set up "reserved" IP addresses for all my main devices - also no change.
I've also disabled Wi-Fi Multimedia power saving mode and I've also updated the firmware to the latest version.

What am I missing? Is the router just faulty or, is there perhaps some setting buried somewhere in the setup/configuration of the router that I either need to enable or disable?

Strange. Does this also happen when you connect/disconnect a games console or a battery-powered LAN device ? Like a laptop ?

I haven't tried connecting such devices via a LAN cable.
However, if I unplug my printer's LAN cable and plug it in again, the same problem occurs.
It's almost like the DHCP server is getting confused and then "cuts off" the wireless, refusing to assign any IP addresses to wireless devices.

Hmm.. No idea then. I thought it maybe was a problem with grounding or there was a voltage surge.
If it is a software problem, you could try to update the firmware.

Sounds like you've tried just about everything I could think of to suggest. The firmware update was my ace in the hole. Have you tried a factory reset on the router? Print off or note down all your settings, hold the reset button in for 30 seconds, then reprogram it for your home network. Maybe try a barebones setup to start with, using default IP range, minimal wifi setup, etc. If it still occurs, maybe it's going bad. You could also try flashing it back to older firmware revs to see if the problem goes away.

Or, you can just get a separate wireless AP, plug into one of your LAN ports, and disable wifi in the router. I like these:

edit: Jo22 may also be onto something. If there's a short somewhere, then that could be causing the issue whenever you connect/disconnect an RJ45.

The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

Yes, tried factory reset as well. The reason why I updated to the latest firmware is because my brother experienced the same problem and I thought that a firmware upgrade would fix it. Unfortunately, it didn't.

That separate wireless AP looks almost like the Starship Enterprise 🤣
