Pentium II 350MHz or Pentium III 450MHz?

Pentium II 350MHz or Pentium III 450MHz?

Postby PcBytes » 2018-8-12 @ 18:21

So I'm planning on buying a BX board (Lucky Star 6ABX2V) and remembered that I bought a Pentium III 450MHz a while back and had no use for it.

What do you think? How is the performance between these two? Is there a noticeable difference in Windows 9x games (and DOS as well) between the two?

Architecture wise the PIII is marginally faster.
Other than that its merely a 45/35 brute force advantage if you get the PIII. SSE will only play a theoretical role I guess.

How is the performance between these two?

Almost the same as PII 450. You might as well go with overclocked Mendocino Celeron.

Depends on your graphics card; the PIII 450 will net you much, much better results out of anything from a Voodoo 2 onwards.

25% in best case scenario.

25% is not an insignificant jump.

Personally I would go for the Pentium II 350 MHz because it was what my own machine had back in those days. It ran all of my favorite games just fine.

If you want moar power then install a 1.4 GHz Tualatin Celeron.

nVidia TNT2 M64 32MB is what I want to use. I do have a GF2 MX400 64MB as a alternate option, but I think that would be too much.

I'll probably go with the Pentium III 450MHz in the end, just to have enough performance for games. OS is going to be Windows 98 SE.

The above made me curious and the P3B-F here needed a spin anyway. So here is one answer:

Depending on your board, you can overclock the P3 to around 560, maybe more.
P3 800 | 512MB | PCI V3 3000 16MB @ 195/195 | PCI SB Live! | WinME
P3 450 | 128MB | AGP TNT2 Pro 32MB | ISA SB16 CT4170 | DOS710
A64 2.4 | 1GB | PCIe Radeon X800XT @ 571/571 | PCI SB Live! | Win2K

Shouldn't it overclock well past the 600MHz barrier?

I don't think so, and at 600MHz it's already running at a 133MHz FSB.

According to the 6ABX2V/6AZX2V manual at
http://www.elhvb.com/mboards/luckystar/ ... 6abx2v.pdf
this is a jumperless design and the BIOS only offers fsb 66 and 100.

^nvm on the 6ABX2V, couldn't catch it fast enough and got sold.

Found a Jetway J-7BXAN though, and this one has DIP switches.

Might be able to push it to 133 I guess.
