2003.06 - Athlon XP 3200+, Radeon 9800 Pro, Sound Blaster Audigy 2

Postby arncht » 2018-9-05 @ 18:02

project started: feb 2018
targeted month: 2003.06

goals:
* amd & ati computer from the golden age
* r3x0 based ati vga with pre athlon 64 cpu
* nforce chipset

basically i prefer the intel and the nvidia products, but there was a period (2002-2003), when i liked more the green-red concurrency.
originally i wanted to build a bba radeon 9700pro config (it was a revolutionary card), but it is impossible to find one in a good working condition. i jumped to the 9800pro, it is easier.

Asus A7N8X Deluxe rev 2.0 NVIDIA nForce2 Ultra 400

Sapphire Atlantis Radeon 9800 Pro 128M AGP ATI Radeon 9800 Pro

most of the mainboards of this age has problems with capacitors. very common problem, it is hard to find something in an "original" condition, i dont want it to recap.
i found an asus a7n8x deluxe 2.0, the caps are in quite good condition. anyway very bad experience. burned cpu, damaged socket, and pcb. i could boot just once (with another cpu), then i gave up.

Abit NF7 - S 2.0 or AN7! Best socket 462 motherboards in my opinion! Rubycon caps - will last for ever!
Abit KW7 if you can find one is also very good - native SATA controller however it's form 2004. DFI is another great option however bad caps are common.
PS: I don't understand what it's the matter with all these white cases! I got black only since my first build in 1996; also no yellowing problem!

i wanted an original passive cooling, and i dont wanted to change the asus line :D anno i also had the nf7s. the nf7 would be the pair of the a7n8x, the an7 is a little bit later model (like the a7n8x-e or -x).

i like the beige cases - that was the popular color, nobody uses black cases before 2003-2004.

I got 2 socket 462 based systems; they perform very similar and I am testing now which chipset - Nvidia or Via - is the best performing one.
CPU: Athlon XP 3200 common for both systems
RAM: 2*1gb Corsair DDR400 CAS2 common for both systems
Motherboard Abit AN7 and Abit KW7
GPU: geforce 7800gs common for both systems
PSU FSP 350w with fat 5v rail common for both systems
HDD: some really slow maxtor drives.
NF2 has the upper hand in direct x 8 games and benchmarks however in any direct X 9 game the video card is the bottleneck and the performance difference is negligible.

If you want an athlon xp system, probably a good idea to get used to the idea of recapping stuff. Very few boards will still have the original capacitors in good condition. Even the photo above of yours shows at least one capacitor bulged and that would have a negative effect on the motherboard working properly.

Also, don't forget you need a power supply with a strong 5V rail, as the vast majority of Athlon XP motherboards did not have the 12V aux power feed.

sep 2018

Asus A7N8X Deluxe rev 2.0 NVIDIA nForce2 Ultra 400

second round - it is a very nice condition board, but the caps are also not perfect. anyway the memtest86 looks ok - i will run more torture tests.
it comes with every accessories, which is really nice, but i don't plan to use them (com, firewire, joystick port etc).

Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 120G IDE
LiteOn XJ-HD166S 16x DVD-ROM IDE
LiteOn LTR-52327S 52x32x52x CD-RW IDE

authentic drives - the liteons beige is a little bit different, but this is the original color, no discoloration.
the 120g 7200.7 not a special drive, but actually does the job - and this is the most silent hdd from this age without any vibration.

OK, I just mean that nF2/nF3/KT880/PT880/i865 are top configs for 98/ME.
I think for WinXP-games era it is better to use 2-core CPUs and SP3 :)

if it is slow something, i use the newer retro pc :) i have 5 pcs from 1994 to 2006.
basically i want to fly back to the past with the period correct pcs to relive a the age. they are authentic from the sw, os, drv side too - like a time capsule.
