Power supply and cpu upgrade

Postby elderago » 2018-9-16 @ 06:08

Been working on my dell dimension, Im currently looking for a power supply with two molex cables (modern ones only have one) as I dont think just one molex cable will work

also I saw I could upgrade the cpu from 2.4 to 2.6 is it worth it also is this a legit pentium 4 legit ? its only five dollers and I would like to be scammed or damage the motherboard https://www.ebay.com/itm/CPU-INTEL-PENTIUM-4-2-60GHZ-512-800-SL6WH-Socket-478-CPU-Working-Pull/292641160126?hash=item4422c5bbbe:g:mFcAAOSwvQRbSiom

What model number Dimension? Depending on the model it could only support 400 fsb cpu's or possibly 400/533 or all three, 400,533,800mhz.

So it could top out at a 2.6 400fsb or 3.06ghz 533 Northwood chip, or take 3+ghz Northwood and Prescott P4's.
Main pc: Asus Rampage Gene ii, X5650, 250gb Samsung Evo, RX480, 12gb Crucial DDR3 1600.

There are adapters from SATA to Molex and if you can't find one then building it is pretty easy: no tools crimp job.

So I cant find any records of a Dimension 4540, there is a 4550 however and it tops out at either a 2.8/512/533 P4 or a 3.06/512/533 chip. The 3.06 chip also has Hyper Threading which may or may not work depending on your bios support and motherboard chipset.

The 3.06 does not run any hotter than the 2.8ghz since they both use the Northwood core. The Prescott's run hot but arent compatible with the 4550 anyway.
