Lately i bought a GPU batch, the ones i was interested in were the 9800 XXL and the 4200 TI, the problem is that i have a really bad feeling about the heat sink used for the XXL, it's really damn thick and flat and it doesn't strike me as a good way to conduct heat away from the chip.

I have heard from people that the card gets pretty damn hot, so i was thinking of replacing the heat sink with a custom one, has anyone done it before ? what kind of heat sink would you suggest for this GPU ? is any of you experienced with this card ?

These were just downclocked OEM versions of the 9800 XT (R360) - problem is finding a better cooler which fits your board layout. Maybe you could find a used original cooler from a 9800 XT - bigger fan / copper (coated?) heatsink or for aftermarket coolers then something like the Zalman VF700-CU / VF900-CU and the Arctic Cooling ATI Silencer 3.

I was searching for a 9700 pro and i happened to buy this and other cards, i'm pretty satisfied, the downclocking is ridiculously low to the point where i asked myself why they even tried to shave off those few Hz and the features are the same, it gets pretty much the same result of a 9800XT; it's a damn strange card in design.

At first it didn't seem to have the same holes of a 9800 XT, but it seems they are identical, so i guess you are right, i could try searching for some good aftermarket cooler for the 9800 XT and be done with it.
