I recently got two 5.25" floppy drives, Teac FD-55GFR 193-U and NEC FD1157C. The NEC drive was pretty much pristine inside, no dust or anything and the Teac one was full of fluff and dust that I cleaned out.
Both drives do the startup sounds, when accessing A: in DOS the motors move and access light comes on but all I can get is "Not ready reading drive A" after 13 or so seconds with or without floppy. I have tried both DSDD and DSHD floppies.
Jumper settings on both seemed to match what internet suggests they should be aswell. I have tried several cables and positionings on the cables (I get either no activity at all or what I described). Capacitors are all ok, index hole is being detected, heads move to default position if I push them elsewhere, heads themselves should be ok or I'd get track 0 or some other error instead of a timeout...
Test machines have been a 386DX and one 486DX2 machine, both which work perfectly with 3.5" drives.
What might the problem be ?
