Hi guys
I've put together the rig I want to use as a fast Win98 rig. It's not the final configuration I want but it is working - to a point!
The rig as it stands now is ECS P4M800PRO-M V2.0, Core2 Duo 2,4GHz, 1Gb DDR2 533, 2x SSD (60GB Samsung, 64GB Kingston) Asus N8200 Deluxe (Geforce 3 64MB AGP), Sony DVDROM
I have XP installed on the Samsung and 98SE on the Kingston - I can choose which to boot from the Bios and that works great.
So after some messing about I managed to install Win98SE. On the way to achieving this I learnt a few things..
Win98 won't boot with 2GB RAM because it is insufficient to load windows but 1GB is plenty. Total nonsense really.
I couldn't load Win 98 from the bootable CD with a SATA DVD Drive but I had an IDE one lying around and it worked fine
And that playing around with old hardware and software is a lot of fun!
So as I said it is now loaded and working after a fashion
Problems I still have and need some help with...
I loaded the V2.0 USB drivers but it won't recognise my USB stick in Win98. Win XP works fine so I know the USB port is OK. To load drivers etc I'm having to boot XP, copy files from my USB stick to a folder on the Win98 drive then rebooting into win98 to install them
The PC will not shut down from win 98 - it just sits there forever saying windows is shutting down. From XP it shuts down fine. Probably related to this the PC hangs up at various points loading drivers, it may even blue screen with an excepion or black screen - but a manual reboot and it continues and loads the driver OK
I have a few unknown devices in win98 and can't seem to find a driver
I tried to load DirectX 8.1 and also directX8.2 from different sources but dxdiag says I have DirectX6.1
Any help would be much appreciated
best regards
Rich
