This will be one of my last posts here on Vogons... So I think I will be posting todays project.

I have this breadbin Commodore64 (old model) that uses a 12volt VIC-II video chip. And I wanted to be able to use a 5volt VIC-II chip in it. The reason is that the 12volt 6569 VIC-II chip, have an inferiour picture quality, compared to the 5volt 8565 VIC-II chip. The difference is higher contrast on the new chip yet the major downside is that it introduces some kind of vertical jailbar's. Those will be extemely visible on a flatscreen TV, yet that can be solved, using a Lumafix64 mod. (that belongs in a totally different tread, if people here do not know it and want info on it)

Anyway....
With a "new" VIC-II combined with a lumafix and the old SID chip. You pretty much get the best of both models. And you can maintain the original Breadbin case with it's original motherboard. And so I did some tinkering with my solder iron today.

Some time ago, I did a prototype....
here and here

And today I did the final product.

The attachment Adaptor-01-Bottom-Part.jpg is no longer available
The attachment Adaptor-02-Top-Part.jpg is no longer available
The attachment Adaptor-03-Finished-Sandwich.jpg is no longer available
The attachment Adaptor-04-Side-01.jpg is no longer available
The attachment Adaptor-05-Side-02.jpg is no longer available

I hope this will be at some help to others, that are for some reason in the need to run a 8565 on a 6569 compatible board....

There is plenty of room inside the socket pair to add a ceramic capacitor, say 0.47uF between the +5V supply pin and GND (keep wiring as short and straight as possible). This alone might help reducing or even removing the "jailbars".

Yup. I have read about the cap, somewere else. Yet the goal of a LumaFIX, is to be able to controle chroma and luma at the same time. And because every C64 is different in this way, I felt that the LumaFIX is the way to go compared to a single cap between pin40 and pin13.

I think the most versatile way to go, is feeding 5volt to pin13, and use the Lumafix. I have actually asked if this idea can be used in a Lumafic for C64 board, up to 250466 (as far as I know, the last VIC-II-12volt board). Specifically using 5voly chip on 12volt board, when using the LumaFIX. The idea is still to be able to use new VIC-II on old board. And I have no idea on why people want to keep using 12volt VIC-II chips, as the 5volt gives so better image quality.

Sure you can get annoyed by them jailbars, yet do you really want green and blue to look the same, or do you want them to be two different colours and have some jailbars? I took notice on winther games. Using the old VIC-II chip in a breadbin, you kind of have extreme difficult in reading the letters in the menu, yet on a C64-C or a breadbin with 5volt VIC-II, you can actually read the green letters on the blue background, without spending time on interpreting what is written.

C64 talk is always interesting, even if I seldom have any useful input, but the above is what concerns me most. Why would you quit the forums?
