Hi all!

I just bought a Roland Sound Canvas SC-88VL and hooked it up by using the gameport of my Sound Blaster Live. I'm running WIndows 98 and set the midi output to ''SB Live! MIDI OUT''
If i play a .mid file, the Roland works perfectly and shows the instrument bars correctly. If i run games however the Roland doesnt picks up any signs of midi imput.

Do i have to set the Sound Canvas in a different mode or something ? Or maby change a setting on the pc ?

Please help 😀

Greetz

What game or games have you specifically tried to test it with? And are you running the games from Windows 98 or MSDOS?

I tested doom and duke nukem 3d. Here i can set the sound canvas as default but the SC isn’t receiving midi signals. I also tried Monkey Island 3. Again no midi, but normal sound

What is controlling the SC-88? Are you using a gameport to MIDI cable from the sound blaster?

Yes. I connected the gameport to the midi-in and routed back the audio through line in.

I read something about softMPU, do i need that?

Yes, you do need to run SoftMPU before the game.

Why do you need softmpu? The module is an SC-88VL, not an MT-32 so it doesn't need intelligent mode.

See here for some instructions:

I think it should work under DOS just fine if configured properly.

I'll have to test it out when I get a chance.

Use google translate. Pretty readable with it translated.

When I get a chance to test, I'll make my own instructions and post them on vogons. That Russian page seems really, really wordy compared to what it could be.

You might be able to use the gameport for MIDI if you use the WDM drivers instead of the VxD ones. Windows will then emulate MPU-401 and Sound Blaster Pro by itself. One other option are using VDMSound for MPU-401 emulation and disable the Sound Blaster emulation part. Many other "non Creative" PCI sound cards of that period got proper MPU-401 UART support.
