Customer Support Document #3021

Logitech® WingMan® Warrior™: Using a Serial Connector vs. Game Port Connector

This document is written with the assumption that the user has a general understanding of basic Windows® 98 commands in order to perform the procedures detailed below. When possible, we try to describe the entire process in full detail. However, different system configurations often require different procedures to perform these actions. It is beyond the scope of this document to provide all the necessary information to perform all the procedures mentioned on all possible system configurations. For assistance with these procedures, please consult the Microsoft Windows manual or on-line help system. If your particular question is not addressed in this document, please check our Customer Support Document catalog to select another document which might better help you.

Q: Why is there a 9 pin serial connector and a 15 pin game port connector?

A: The 9 pin serial connector gives the WingMan Warrior full digital control and the 15 pin game port connector is for older true DOS based games which may not be compatible with a 9 pin serial interface. NOTE: SpinControl™ is only available if you connect WingMan Warrior to the serial port.

Q: Can the WingMan Warrior be connected to both a serial and game port at the same time?

A: No, it is not recommended to use both connectors at the same time as this can cause some functions to be misinterpreted, or not available, by the system.

Q: When should I use the game port connector vs. the serial port connector?

A: The game port connector should only be used when a DOS game does not support the WingMan Warrior's serial interface. A game port connector is provided so that the Warrior can be used as a WingMan Extreme compatible joystick in unsupported games.

Q: What features do I lose when the WingMan Warrior is connected to the game port vs. the serial port?

A: SpinControl features are not available when the Warrior is connected to the game port as they are only available when the Warrior is connected to the serial port.

Q: What is the switch on the front of the WingMan Warrior used for?

A: The switch is only used when the Warrior is connected to the game port. This allows you to choose between using the HAT or the THROTTLE since both cannot be used due to the limitations of game port architecture. When the Warrior is connected to the serial port, the switch has no effect.
