PKY's Matrox G400 FAQ

NOTE: THIS IS A G400 FAQ ONLY! (though some info in here might not require a G400! ;)

First of all I'd like to thank all those who've send in questions and solutions as well as to those who came up with moral support! The value of this FAQ was and will enlarge with the support of these and other people who actually are facing or were facing problems and sent in their material. Q: I have downloaded the newest BETA 5.50.010 and D3D works great but OpenGL does not run stable (ICD) what can I do? Especially AMD CPU owners who encounter problems with the ICD!
A: D/l my driver pack (
here) and try it or if you do not want to use my mix, please get the latest final drivers in this case 5.41! the MURC.
Q: I do want to have a screen resolution not yet supported by the Matrox PowerDesk 5.x drivers how can I do it?
A: D/l the PowerDesk 5 Resolution Manager by Mark Veneziano (veneziano@mediaone.net) and configure the desired resolution. The program can be obtained @ the MURC.
Q: I've downloaded a new driver, can I just install it over the older one?
A: Actually you can but I'd suggest to use Matrox' PD uninstaller to ensure a flawless installation of the new drivers and to avoid possible problems later. There is often new information stored in the registery which can become a no go with older settings.

Q: How can I stop the symtoms of rainbows in Q1, Q2 and other openGL apps?
A: The symtoms of rainbows seems to occur due to the dynamic lights handling of Matrox' openGL driver. In some apps i.e. GLQuake, you can workaround the problem by disabling dynamic lights or by using the TurboGL drivers. For best visuals try the second solution first!

Q: When I load HL(1.013), either as a new game or from a previous save, there are 5 bands of horizontal shear, how can I get rid of them?
A: On Intel i440BX systems install an intel inf file for the i440BX to support P3/AGP and an inf file for the monitor which provided more color profiles. On other systems try the same, install the latest AGP drivers and check whether or not you can get an inf for your monitor.

Q: I experience random lockups in Re-Volt, what can I do? A: Solve this by using the latest G400 drivers, the latest patch for Re-Volt, and by turning off the "Anisotropic"-filtering setting in Re-Volt. I've heard that you might have to set this setting to "Anisotropic" and back again every time you play the game, since the game might still be using Anisotropic-filtering even if the setting says something else. (read more about this in the faq at Matrox)
Q: Slave Zero (demo) does not run it quits to the desktop, what can I do?
A: Open the szHardware.ini and check the display modes if there are none be sure to run EnumVidModes.exe. Now open the szHardware.ini again and look for a fast (lower res or lower color depth) video mode and keep the display number X in mind.

[Display X]

Now open the file called szOptions.ini search for video

and put your display number where it says

Display Mode Wanted=X

Now just start the game again and check whether or not it works. If it does not choose another video mode.

Q: The system hangs in any application (D3D and OpenGL) is there anything I can try to solve it?
A: A new driver might help but if all drivers you use are new, try the following things to solve a possible problem with your G400:

- disable BUS MASTERING in the advanced display options
- disable AGP 2x mode via the reg patches

Q: I get purple/green artifacts on the buttons on the toolbar in i.e. Windows Mediaplayer, what can I do?
A: This problem can probably be solved by setting "SDRAM Leadoff" to 4 in the BIOS. (this info is at least valid for the ABit BE6-II BX440 mainboard) Note: In the QJ BIOS for BE6-II the "SDRAM Leadoff" setting has been removed, but according to some people the artifacts still don't come back. (it says on ABit's site that the BIOS has improved SDRAM performance, or something alike)
