I just remembered something that might be of interest in the initial post: the D:\ (mounted C drive) has a FAT16 filesystem. So... is there a way to let scandisk access the disk directly?

But in my case, it's required for a certain programme to install. When I couldn't figure out why it didn't install, I recalled all the programmes that it runs before installing and tried running them one by one, and the scandisk is the one that failed.

How come? And can you suggest anything for running the 16-bit scandisk on the 32-bit Vista? Though I don't see why it should be a problem in the first place.
