Re: Retro GPU with true digital DVI output?

I guess I was led off the mark by this old thread: https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=24367 the problem is that the video signal from the DVI is general very poor because its goes through the RAMDAC and then to the SiliconImage Chip to get Digitalized again. like on most other cards from this …

Retro GPU with true digital DVI output?

In my quest to upgrade my 98SE system with better graphics, I’d decided on getting a GPU with DVI to hopefully provide both future compatibility with LCDs, and a better overall image quality. But I’m realizing now that the vast majority - if not all - early DVI cards simply had a Silicon Image chip …

Re: CRT is Making a Loud Popping Noise Randomly

Every Sony CRT I've ever owned has eventually done this, and they were all premium models, including the legendary FW900. It even happened during the warranty period on a 19" F400, which ended up scoring me a free upgrade to the 21" F520. But, basically, it's going to get worse until it just …

Re: Video card for a 98/99 era system…

Thanks. I remember “back in the day” I always felt I got a much better quality picture from ATI or Matrox cards than pretty much anything else, especially since I typically ran Windows at high refresh rates (90-120hz depending on resolution and card capabilities). I think I’m just going to grab a FX …

Re: Video card for a 98/99 era system…

So, as I continue to stray further and further away from my original goal (LOL), what’s to hate or love about the GEForce FX series? They seem to be available in all price ranges, have AGP 3.3V support, reportedly still have good DOS support, etc. So… why are they cheap?

Re: Video card for a 98/99 era system…

I didn't know they were all keyed the same; interesting. It may have been a cost saving measure. Unless someone on the forum verifies, I would not take the chance of destroying your card and/or the motherboard... Even then I would probably note the suggestion and still keep all 8x cards away from a …

Re: Video card for a 98/99 era system…

Thanks for the tips! The “era appropriate” stickler in me is screaming a little bit about 2002, but if it’s still got excellent DOS support and isn’t like a decade later then what’s the big deal, right? And quality of everything is likely better, too. And I can always pick up and swap in some other …

Video card for a 98/99 era system…

My retro DOS/98SE system was originally assembled from random parts I had laying around, and not much thought was put into it. It’s an Asus P2B-LS with a P-II 350, but I will be changing that to a P-III 600. 64mb RAM, changing to 512mb. There is also a Voodoo2 that I plan to continue using, AWE64 …
