It looks like the crash (segfault) didn't point to anything other than the game program itself. You may try enabling compatibility modes, but I don't really know how that function works and that it never really worked for me before. Which nVidia driver version are you using? SpeedBusters has always been buggy. I remember it crashing every now and then at the time, and so does the GOG version, even more often. The original version had glide 2.x and 3.x support which I believe, were the most stable options to play, but unfortunately those don't work with the GOG version. …

The DOS version goes up to Cheetah only. Windows and Mac versions will have the African Swallow, so maybe Cheetah was capped at a different speed.
