I've looked at recording before and for starters, SDL doesn't handle recording(stupid omission IMO). There's a patch or use another API.

Yep. Emulation does a lot of the thing that the p4 is weak at; lots of jumping around; which causes mispredictions, that in turn flushes the pipeline. The longer pipeline, the the longer the delay, and the p4's pipeline is very long.

What's needed is to write a port handling pass through, like how midi is handled, but the quickest solution would be to just get an old 486/pentium for $0-20. Familier with craigslist? Online want ads for a given city/area; has forsale and free, local pickup(only drawback is the delay doing email …

The WSS codec(ad1848) is also used by the Ensoniq Soundscape. It may be as easy as changing MSCDEX_MAX_DRIVES in src/dos/dos_mscdex.cpp. I can't check for myself at the moment because my drive died so I'm temporarily out of commision(typing this from someone elses computer).
