Besides, losing 3dfx support in SW's not that big of a deal. It's still a technically software renderer - just annoyingly blurrier and not any faster. Its hype and impracticality keeps the 3dfx fanboys at bay out of fear of not being able to use their hardware in the late 90s.

Why should it? MMX's only really practical for exotic sound code which would be out of the scope of a maintenance fork.

I use Virtual CloneDrive with my CCDs and the CD audio works in 7 x64.

No. Diversions officially made it freeware 14 years ago to promote One Must Fall Battlegrounds. It didn't premiere on an "abandonware" site.

AC'97 compliancy doesn't guarantee DOS support. That's up to the company making the AC'97 compliant card to provide some "legacy TSR" for it, or some VXD driver that provides dos sound through Windows 9x. I know VIA's AC'97 chips for several Compaq computers in 1999-2000 had a very buggy legacy TSR …
