I'd say it's more of an oversight and a combination of early generation 3d card drivers varying in quality too much. There's many old games that visually break on better drivers. to give another example of this,, Quake3 had skybox edge clamp issues on ATI Radeon cards because Nvidia and 3dfx's GL …

Nope. SoundMax is not part of Windows 98. It's an AC'97 driver provided by your motherboard vendor / OEM.

For a 3d format i'd probably recommend IQM - it's open - the blender exporter is competently written (from my experiences with different formats in blender across different versions of blender, this is a huge bullet point) - plenty of sample code and easy, non-bloated integration - it has the bones …

Given driver bloat and the bad control panels among driver maturity, i'd say on the nvidia side the Geforce4 Ti. Of course, SS7 chipsets may hugely vary on what cards you'll want to run since AGP is such a hit or miss on SS7. A VIA will keep you back at Voodoo3...

I skipped it in the day 2 decades back because it looked unappealing in print ads (tiny screenshots of blocky levels among a generally vague propaganda-like theme with minimal to no information on the game) and I had Quake2 on the brain.

The "24bpp mode" is a filter toggle and shouldn't affect framerate at all. The threshold of the filter can also be adjusted so you could make the picture much more blurrier if you'd like. This makes the filter effect even more obivous

but the voodoo1 does add purple lines to the screen which gets even more pronounced with higher gamma settings. It's not just those lines either.

The MiniGL shipped with GLQuake is '97 old and you should replace it with something newer that knows what advances 3dfx had done since. It's easy to copy 3dfxvgl.dll over opengl32.dll in the quake folder.
