No, flash has always done that, even back in 2003 when this became out of control with the more frequent rise of 'imported-an-avi-for-a-jpeg-image-sequence' flash ads eppearing multiple times. (multiple Fileplanet lines were not fun).

I know Doom 1.0 couldn't run under Win3.1 at all. 1.2 had more tolerance for Windows (but still isn't perfect either)

It only uses shaders to accelerate terrain verts. No effects are shadered, just lots of multitexture combine ops and a cubemap here and there. HWT&L only applies to rigid meshes (and is why many many players are made out of segmented pieces of hard armor). Forceware 61.76 and newer on Win9x …

6.2 was recalled for legal reasons IIRC. The only major difference between the two are disk compression.

I've seen the cutscenes be really really choppy on an actual 386sx long long ago (with a 2x CD-ROM) so I wouldn't be too worried about this.

The obsessive fixation on ASSEMBLY is from the younguns that find awe in games that are "coded in assembly therefore it's the best" for its notability, despite being more of a commonplace thing. "Knowing ASSEMBLY" doesn't automatically give you the Abrash cred and let you win the internet.
