It's very bad with polyphony and sounds more 'buzzy'. Some that might accuse DOSBox's OPL emulation being inaccurate could have grown up on CQM

some more detail: - Available in Oct 1997 - an Adrian Hague made it - the origin of this product is Bellevue WA which is not unusual for early DirectX games

FWIW .sgt files can be played back in Directmusic Producer(which is included on the DX6 SDK disc) Still no MIDI export from there however

FF7 was SF2 only. FF8 used Directmusic only IIRC so what that would use are DLS instrument banks piped through the DirectMusic API They could've done a better job on the SF2 too. Many instruments didn't translate well, like overdrive guitar and many of the FM bits, and the lack of vocals on that …

The last time I fiddled with Win95 Dosbox masochism which by the way I highly advise not to do despite what all those "Half life on my phone's dosbox android's" on youtube tell you, it was the Jan 2014 Daum, and even then it has severe directdraw problems like indexed alpha not working on sprites.

WSS standards strictly specify a real YMF262 chip to meet the spec so yes. Think of WSS as "AC93". The real catch is varying crappiness is in their other chips *cough*Crystal Semiconductor*cough*OPTi*cough*.
