I've sometimes had the CD-ROM requested while the CD-ROM device hadn't been installed by the Windows setup at that point, often when opting for hardware detection in those two checkboxes in the middle of those setup screens. Hard drives are partitioned and formatted.

Dell really limits the upgrade paths, even their old Optiplexes can't handle a virge without frying (in my experience)

Source ports won't help the stuttering issue anyway. I had stuttering from using a SBLive in many games back 14 years ago too.

Before GLQuake, it was just a few VRML clients and screensavers that used OpenGL (Windows consumer-side speaking)

rather unhelpful reply, but I did get The Horde's demo working with a CS4232-based WSS card before using its "SB Emulation", IIRC in 1995.

Starcraft's actually quite well optimized, 486 just gets caught up on the lookup tables for drawing the fog.

I wouldn't use any form of Glide emulation on a 486. Don't emulate on a 486.

I originally wanted to support mod/s3m/it/xm through the Dumb library, which would also lead the way for Ogg support since there's a dumb_ogg module for that (read: ogg music in dos)

I wouldn't use VDMSound or any form of soundchip emulation on a 486.
