I would blame the AWE64 and Apogee's sound code. I've had freezings with Apogee games with the AWE64 on a Pentium II before. Something involving the DSP seems to trigger a hard lock

I disagree. I've ran my am5x86 at 120mhz for awhile and it makes me wish I ran it at 160MHz again. for my 59.79 speedsys and playable Quake score back.

Can we see examples for this desired "integrity"? Like, a review of Half-Life 2 that actually brings up how bad Route Kanal is giving major deductions in the score (like no HL2 review ever)? Bringing up Valve games since there's always that 'praise gaben' bias, kinda ironic.

VirtualPC is the fastest solution I know of. VirtualBox is very slow and relies on virtualization extensions on modern CPUs for it to work well. For Linux however, dosemu can be very fast.

Fullscreen palette issue with Nvidia cards. Try -dibonly and/or windowed mode. This problem dates way, WAY BACK to the Geforce256, so you have nothing to rollback to.

You'd also have to consider consoles typically support even further various compressed texture methods to compensate for the weak cache, most commonly textures that just use only 16 color palettes. Same for sound, it's 4-bit ADPCM or bust.
