The game also looks quite bad in 16-bit color so it's obvious that id didn't really care about the 3dfx userbase. They cared enough in that they had their multitexturing path specifically designed to squeeze out the Voodoo2 with the lightmaps being part of one TMU and the rest of the scene on the …

if you use r_primitives 2. I've discovered recently that Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is running slow on my Radeon HD 5770 without this command. GF256 suffered the same problem of GF3 in that it didn't have a budget entry level version. And it's true HW T&L was mostly just hype at that point, the feature was only extensively used in 2001 and later so it didn't make sense to blow all the hundreds for games that won't be available anyway - …

Operation Flashpoint has Glide, came 2001. Around 2001 I think people were retiring their Voodoos and Rage Pros for at least some GF2MX's 😀

If you're running Quake under Windows you'll need to pass -winmem ## (# being the megabytes you'll want, say 16) in order to allocate more memory for higher resolutions. EGATrek? That not only did 640x350 but also made use of custom colors for it as well. EGARoids is also early, but that only used 2 colors.

The config program doesn't work on Windows 7 either. It is the only glide wrapper i've had luck using with eFX though

You'll have to get the S3VBE20 TSR and run that to extend the VBE bios to access the higher resolutions. The shareware version has no technical limitations.

1. Direct3D is not Glide. 2. Hellbender uses table fog - a feature not supported on modern hardware. Game will be unplayable in Direct3D if it 'worked'. 3. The Microsoft FTP still hosts the trial version

Yeah, that has to do with the protocol change introduced in 1.25-1.27 in Sept-Dec 2000, and running a pre-1.25 exe with 1.25+ PK3s.
