I've tried a Speedstar Pro VLB (CL5426 IIRC) once that had palette corruption and so I fell back to Trio64v+ PCI. Not sure if 5436 exhibits similar issues. and that was 1997.

That's because the Voodoo actually has real ordered dither. My dither is just fake with no regards to error at all, it's literally a bunch of lines on lines with a bunch of ifs ands and buts to make some dot pattern. It's functionally closer to nVidia TNT/Geforce dither than it is to the Voodoo …

I was flattered when contentID matched XENON2.MOD (a transcribing of a transcribing) to the actual Bomb the Bass Megablast song. I pulled the video immediately afterward though.

I did once try the Techland D3D MiniGL with the Matrox G100A (which doesn't support MSI but is strongly similar to Mystique anyway) and got a dithered up alpha-blended lightmap in Quake2.

Technically on VGA, the resolution that low is doublescanned to 640x400... a few higher resolutions (400x300, 512x384) tend to be doublescanned as well (though there are some rare cases where 512x384 isn't)

I never got 24-bit/32-bit rendering working in Unreal even with the depth set to 24. Anyone else ever got it to work? It would be better since it'll run faster 😀

It's not using GM.DLS. DirectMusic is an API introduced in DirectX 6 that provides software MIDI synthesis with custom instruments strongly similar to Microsoft Synthesizer in W98. Very few games use it (Shogo, Blood 2), and FFVIII PC is among those few.

Well yeah Japanese brand loyalty is a big thing, it's partly how NEC had initial foothold with PowerVR PCX2 there despite being a card developed in England.

NOTE: Quake's source does not compile for DOS out of the zip. It's 1.09 source, which never had a DOS release and the DOS platform was slightly regressed in the code... ALSO NOTE: Doom's source release wasn't for DOS either. People had to reimplement it using libraries such as Allegro.
