I really wouldn't consider 98 over XP unless the hardware I was using was so old that XP was sluggish or wasn't supported at all.

CoolEdit 95/96 can do that. Quake is the earliest game to make use of it (to my knowledge) and it is what id Software used. On PC, ADPCM was really used far later in the 90s when things were phasing away from CD audio for music and MP3 licensing was still too expensive. SiN and GTA2 are nice ADPCM …

Duke3D used VOC. Also their khz was painfully low (ranging from 5998hz to 8800hz, and sometimes 10989hz if you're lucky. The freeze sound and the whistling are the only high quality sounds.

I've had some increased frame latency while using it on <500MHz machines with audible stuttered notes... there is definitely some CPU usage put through the OPL emulation TSR.

The only MS-DOS 7 "real release!!! its real" i've seen is just some misleading allegedly GPLv2 hackup hoax that reminds me of a certain Bart's Boot disk.... other than that fake piece of shit, the only real MS-DOS 7 gets no realer than the COMMAND subfolder in Windows 95/98/ME.

No, but i've considered using a secondary fast Windows 98SE-based machine to get the 9X/DOS builds working again. Also the engine has a problem with BASSmidi freezing on loading sometimes, however that recent OPL3 synth driver seems fine with it (fortunately). I've yet to commit the new deathcam …

CD audio got regressed since the most recent versions were developed within Windows 7 with no way to debug it. You can pause the game and resize the window at least (one glorious hack i'm most proud of). The video modes menu needs serious rewriting.
