Thanks though in the end I removed allegro anyway. I want to use the Apogee sound system from ROTT instead but that's all Watcom. This is what i've done so far. NOTE: NO EGA STUFF IN IT 🙁

Well technically you're shooting for 2006 games since you're limiting yourself to Linux, and you want that stupidly broken overrated 'compiz' novelty to work as top priority, so... Look for an AGP Geforce8/9

Anyone else feel annoyed when you read about some music for a system attributed blindly as "MIDI" somehow? Like as in "the MIDI music in that SNES game is bad", stuff like that where midi doesn't exactly apply in mind with general midi as a device. It's as diluted as a name like Photoshop is now.

In the meantime.... (unfortunately the VFD site is down (thanks to infostink.jp), I prefer that over ImDisk as it doesn't treat every file type ever as some image file to mount with ImDisk Virtual Drive(tm) in every shell popup possible)

Ste Cork released it as freeware too http://www.classicdosgames.com/game/Overkill.html Personally I never liked it since I was already spoiled by VGA and Sound Blaster by 1992. I couldn't stand the PC speaker anymore for a while then 🙁

To my dissapointment, copying CMS.DRV to more modern Sierra/Dynamix games don't quite work. 🙁 Anyway, here's some demo that have CMS support. They're apparently freaking hard to find
