Please totally disregard my second issue. Text mode was wonky, and resizing was broken for a while there (didn't know ddraw was broken,) led to some incorrect conclusions. Once I've gotten sdl lib set up again, this whole issue will be over. Thanks all, sorry to have been a bother.
