today by pure coincidence I acquired a nice job lot that included a seemingly oh-so-rare PCI-V3800/32M(TV) based on the Riva TNT2! Really? I thought the AWE64 GOLD had a superior wavetable to the value edition, learn something new everyday, for most practical purposes theirs no real advantage with the gold card?

What is so "special" about this ? ^^ In computer terms "special" means the same as if you were referring to a person that was special, ie retarded, same thing with video cards you have the radeon 98/9600 cards and the "special editions", just means they've been dropped and lost half their memory …

The MX440 would be a good card it's basically a high end GeForce 2. Edit: I've had good success using Geforce FX5200/5500 on my pentium pro machine, good compatibility with Dos and Windows but I've been using windows 98SE, not sure if windows 95 will start becoming a problem because of the OS age …

320X400 is a good mode in Duke Nukem 3D on my cyrix 5x86-120 with ark logic VGA, the performance hit is small from 320X200 and is a noticeable improvement in visual quality.

Did you get a chance to run Doom3 or Farcry? I ran into performance issues with the 6200 PCI in the doom3 benchmark hitting about 17fps @ 1024x768, I get a feeling PCI cards can be useful for games up to 2003/2004.

Those 3Dmark 2003 results look very impressive to me.... I tested some PCI cards recently ie the FX5500/ATI 9100 they can't come close to your results, much older technology but it still implies your card can get big improvements on the PCI bus. How about the Geforce 4ti4200s? Stil good prices IMO they were a hero card. The geforce 3s werent significantly faster than top of the line Geforce 2s but offered DX8 capabilities, The TI200 models are common but the orginal and ti500 are rarer and people are asking big money for them A quick look …

Its a very interesting debate as it depends on what your trying achieve. If I can sum up my thoughts, you can use a 6200 which will score higher in paper benchmarks like 3dmark 2001/03/05 but it doesn't translate to a useful gaming experience over something like a FX5500 E.G Doom3, still pretty crap …
