Re: DOSBox 0.74 CPU Benchmark (Quake)

Or/and need MTRR activated, what can be tried to be done in DOS by MTRRLFBE utility (command "mtrrlfbe lfb wc" for 800x600, "mtrrlfbe vga wc" for 320x200). I tried that and measured 30.0 fps for each in 800x600. Almost like if it vsyncs to the screen for some reason, which is 60 Hz according to my …

Re: DOSBox 0.74 CPU Benchmark (Quake)

I wonder how low the fps counter can go. 0.00000001 fps? I guess, the game will display 0.0 fps. Luckily, it also displays the time it took, so you can calculate the exact frame rate from it. That's why I also posted the time in my Raspberry Pi 2 results. Right now, it is at the second box of nails …

Re: DOSBox 0.74 CPU Benchmark (Quake)

I hooked up an old hardrive and installed Windows 98 on my Phenom II X4 905. Windows doesn't even start complaining about not enough RAM. But the relevant DOS part works and runs Quake. No 3rd party VESA driver was used, as 800x600 ran out of the box. This is of course without sound: 29.8, 29.8, 29 …

Re: DOS RAM limiter?

in DOS
In my experience, problems usually occur to some games when there is more than 32 MB RAM free. If you have 64 MB RAM, another nice option is to allocate 32 MB to SMARTDRV. I wonder, if there actually is a DOS game which would use more than 32 MB RAM.

Re: Original setup files missing from GOG games

in DOS
On what basis do they actually decide which games should have complete ISOs and which don't? Many games indeed come with an image ready to be burned and installed on an old PC. Unfortunately, that information is not part of the game's page. Usually, they call the .cue file .dat, .ins or .inst and …

Original setup files missing from GOG games

in DOS
It's a pity, that some GOG games have stripped down images missing the setup files required to install it on an actual DOS PC. I made a wish entry, but it doesn't seem to get attention at all. Since many here are like me, playing old games on the hardware they were made for, please vote for this …

Re: Monkey Island 1 CD door closing sound

I'll have to arrange another session with the Win98 to check its hardware. It' an OPL2 compatible though, as MI2's AdLib soundtrack worked without a problem. I'll probably also bring by laptop and an AUX cable to do a much cleaner recording. While at it, record some other sounds as well like the …

Re: Monkey Island 1 CD door closing sound

I checked the multi-language CD on all languages. They're all have the same door close sounds. After this very short SOU resource follows the ADL resource. There is no more sample data in the resources. I even checked the Sega version, which also has the same short sample. I wonder, is there a …

Re: Monkey Island 1 CD door closing sound

The closing sound, which I assume follows the opening sound, is very brief and barely audible in your Win98 recording. Certainly nothing like a "Ta-DUMM"... Yet, it clearly is indeed longer than I remember it on several machines. That's an odd issue indeed. I'll try it on my Windows machine and …

Re: Monkey Island 1 CD door closing sound

I only know the DOS enhanced CD like this. Maybe you remembered a different version. The floppy versions use OPL sounds for doors and the Amiga version plays some drum samples. In the Ultimate Talkie Editions I replaced those low quality sounds with their higher quality counterparts of the SE.

Re: Hardware you wish you'd never bought.

in Milliways
I once bought an LCD projector with VCD resolution. It was acceptable for most console games and VHS video back then, but nothing more. Still my 1084s had a considerably better image. All Creative hardware that's not a CD-ROM drive. Funny, the worst thing I ever got from Creative was a DVD drive. I …

Re: Newest DOS games

in DOS
That is impressive. Did you reverse-engineer the original executable somehow, or did you just compile part of ScummVM for DOS? The executable is basically the Indy4 talkie merely patched for General MIDI support. The driver for that is taken from the Sam&Max WIP demo, which interestingly is the …

Re: Newest DOS games

in DOS
My Monkey Island Ultimate Talkie Edition also runs on native DOS machines. Burn it on CD, if you like, and play it like most DOS games of the 90's directly off the CD. It requires VGA and Soundblaster and also supports Adlib, MT-32 and General MIDI.

Re: Monkey Island CD with Roland MT-32

in DOS
Can I ask does your tool work with the Steam version of MI SE? It does. I tested it with the Steam version and with the DVD version. And it was reported to work with other PC download versions as well. (The only difference is the executable, which isn't required) The XBOX version may or may not …

Re: Monkey Island CD with Roland MT-32

in DOS
The Monkey Island CD has no MT-32 nor any other MIDI music. There's only the CD audio tracks. However, if you have the Special Edition for PC, you can convert it into a true DOS talkie version with MT-32, General MIDI and Adlib music using my Ultimate Talkie Edition Builder: http://gratissaugen.de/ …
