Re: Rick Parks

in Milliways
That's a beautiful tribute to a very talented person. Maybe VOGONS could create a forum just for tributes to departed people who added to computing/gaming/computer-research/etc, as I think that would be a good idea?

Re: Most disappointing games?

I've just remembered a monumental disappointing game; The Getaway on the PS2. This is a more linear GTA 3 game, set in London. And on the plus side the designers did add their own original ideas to the game. And on the minus side, that included some staggeringly awful design choices that ruined the …

I bought a used copy of "thief" for the 360 a while back. It was a waste of $20 because I thought it was boring AF. I returned it and got some other games though. That reboot was *very* disappointing. If you can, play Thief 1 and 2 (PC exclusives) and if you like them play Thief 3. If you don't …

Re: Upgrading to Windows 10 no longer optional

The people who rush to upgrade to any new version of Windows just because it is new, are mostly those people who lack much understanding of how computers work or what an operating system is. Well, that's not always the case, there are also people choosing to upgrade to an immature OS consciously …

Re: Upgrading to Windows 10 no longer optional

I'm happy with Windows 7, and since Windows 10 doesn't yet offer anything that I want then I'm sticking with Windows 7 since it works fine, and I know how to use it. The people who rush to upgrade to any new version of Windows just because it is new, are mostly those people who lack much …

The practicality of racing games using Google Street View?

in Milliways
I was bored earlier today, so I was randomly looking through Google Street View, and it is amazing. And the obvious thought reoccurred to me that a great driving/racing game could be built around the real street photographs so that you could effectively drive or race around your own local area using …

Re: 3D Pool - Kixx XL

in DOS
Off topic, sort of, but if that game is the same as on the Atari ST, then it's not much good at all. *Much* better are the two games Archer Mclean's Pool and Jimmy White's Snooker , and on the PC they are DOS games so you can run them on almost anything. The best PC pool/snooker game I've ever …

Recently, I've been bummed out by the SWBF beta. The controls feel bad and I'm not having any fun. You can still play the first two games, they are great and probably have good mods too (I've never tried any mods with them, but I always meant to, I know there are mods for them). The new SWBF is, to …

TimeShift. So much potential....so drab and boring. The (back)story is told through cutscenes in between levels. I like Timeshift, or rather I like parts of it. The time manipulation is really good, the levels look good, the weapons are good, and at times it can be very enjoyable. On the other hand …

Re: 64bit Vanilla Dosbox?

Alright, so by then virtual machines might be easier and more convenient to install/set up/use, but Windows gamers won't be pleased that they can't just run Half-Life 1 and 2, the Unreal Tournament games, etc, 'native' in Windows. I could be wrong, but I thought Windows already uses a virtual …

Re: Scariest Level Ever?

I'm voting for Thief 3: Deadly Shadows - Robbing the Cradle I still remember playing this late at night all alone and with the lights out. EDIT: Here is a video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rw4YZuRUgXA Yes, that would be my vote too. All the more amazing as (a) Thief 3 (or any other Thief game) …

Re: System Shock might be available to buy soon!

Wish there were new levels for this game. The original levels are great but I played through them too often already. See, I've had this thought for the longest time. It's not like the level format in System Shock is even that complicated. Every level is made up of squares on a grid which can be …

Re: System Shock might be available to buy soon!

Kerr Avon, there are lots of users on the GOG forum complaining about issues and getting refunds. On my Windows 10 machine the game works great, but it seems that the wrapper or whatever it is, still has a few bugs that need fixing. But seeing this is an important release, I do expect fixes to come …

Re: System Shock might be available to buy soon!

Sadly, it looks like the GOG version can't be completed. It seems like the end boss fight in the game is timed via the host PC's framerate (or so the game thinks), and so running it on a modern PC confuses the game's timing, making it impossible for the player to win.
