Re: Classic DOS Games interviews QBix (DOSBox Developer)

in Milliways
Start Dosbox and your Windows installation, go to the SB16 program group and start SB Configuration and check whether the settings are Dosbox settings. Base I/O: 220 MPU-401 MIDI port: 330 IRQ: 7 Low DMA:1 High DMA:5 Well, there's the problem: I didn't have an SB16 program group! I initially just …

midi in Win3.11 works fine, at least it did so last time I checked. I don't remember having to do anything special to make it work. Probably an error of the computer configuration (midi volume in the host turned off, or so) or wrong midi device selected in the conf. I can't speak for Win3.11, but …

Re: Multiple SVGA Chipset patch

This plugin stores its variables in a section of dosbox.conf called "VGA". There are two variables: svgachipset and videoram. S3 is the default, but that's no guarantee of compatibility. Games that support SVGA resolutions will usually indicate which chipsets they support, and often how much video …

WolverineDK: I'm not sure what you're talking about. Did I mention DOSShell? elianda: There is at least one piece of software that runs on 8514 only. I'm not, by any means, suggesting that a lot of effort should be put into playing just Mah Jongg -8514-, but if someone has the knowledge and …

Re: Accelerator board? In those old days?

I just found this writeup that apparently came with a program called QuikMenu. The 8514/A card simply provides a high resolution of 1024×768 with 16 or 256 colors in this mode, depending on the amount of memory installed on the card. This card works on any Micro Channel system unit that has an …

Yes, I suspect that Ron wanted people to be using a fast 486 for this game. Glad you got it to work. Any bugs or issues? hdiload.exe you say? I had never heard of that. Apparently there's a TSR to get the card into 8514/a mode. Downloading, and I'm going to try that Mach 32 again! Thanks elianda! " …

Re: Multiple SVGA Chipset patch

Hi vasyl. First of all, great job on the SVGA plugin. I've been able to use an emulator called RIXAI to emulate an 8514/a adapter using the Tseng ET4000 svgachipset. To the best of my knowledge, I'm the first person to play Mah Jongg -8514- in DOSBox. That's a pretty amazing accomplishment for your …

Woah! I just figured out why the game was so jerky. I've been getting errors out the wazoo. I have about a zillion of these, with different memory addresses, in the status window: Copy code to clipboard 1 Illegal write to c0033650, CS:IP c7ff: 1d,phys c0033650

When you click a legal piece, there's a high pitched sound. When you select an illegal piece, or try to match a legal piece with a piece that doesn't match, there's a low pitched sound. If you can hear but not see, the first things that come to mind are that your monitor isn't capable of running …

MJ8514 uses the 1024x768 interlaced graphics mode. Not all monitors from that era could handle that. From the documentation: "Hardware requirements are rather steep, especially for a game. You'll need 8514/a graphics (a true 8514/a card or a 1-meg Super VGA card with 8514 AI emulation software), a …

Re: Accelerator board? In those old days?

Ah, v1.1! And now it works. My God, it's beautiful! MJ8514 looks so much better than MJVGA. I'm absolutely stunned. Ron kept MJVGA at 16 colors so that he could use 640x480, but seeing it in 256 colors is just amazing. Cycle count has to be really high, and my mouse still staggers around a lot. …

Re: Accelerator board? In those old days?

I'm familiar with his site but I never bothered to try it out. I tried all of the chipsets with no success. I was hoping that RIXAI would detect an SVGA card and help me emulate an 8514/a, but it doesn't seem to be finding compatible hardware.

Re: Accelerator board? In those old days?

That's my website that Qbix pointed out. I tried to play Mah Jongg -8514-, with and without RIXAI8.exe (evaluation copy of 8514/A Emulation Program RIXAI Version 1.0), with a Pentium 166 using a Trident SVGA card with 1MB of RAM, a Mach 32, and other assorted old graphics cards that I have lying …
