I would get the mce2vga : https://www.serdashop.com/MCE2VGA This was made specifically for pc signals, just plug in and it works. In arcade world cga means low resolution 15khz signal and ega means 25khz signal... No idea why they are named like that but they are not pc standard signals.

ESS688 per datasheet offers midi support - the expected UART one. No intelligent stuff going on in that cart I'm afraid (or even a midi input port).

I also have this card - it has a jumper to select what SB version you want: SB2.0 or PRO , very interesting but no idea if useful in reality 😁

Nice system! About the SCC-1, the newer version is silkscreened SCC-1A It really is no issue in gaming, maybe if you compose music you would want the extra samples but otherwise they go unused AFAIK

Heheh Sure wolf3d is a 1992 game too new for 286 but in this case it shows how older cacheless 386dx boards really perform. Anyways, it is better to have cache and disable it rather than no option at all as it's been said earlier in the thread.
