Here is a pic on the same monitor, vga cable and default settings - source is my ss7 build with a Diamond S3 vga: I think this shows the monitor is not the issue for me.

OK this is a dedicated MPU and it is really needed if you plan to do MT-32 (and similar modules) gaming. These old MT-32 games do need a fully-fledged roland mpu to work. I use these specific game shots because I know how they look on a real ega monitor so I can compare them easier. Will upload some patterns later since they are a baseline for others to compare

I spent some time cleaning my board from flux and I think it helped. Maybe there was some parasitic interference or something and I am pretty sure that once I install the 1% resistor packs things will improve further. @640K!enough I am using leaded solder that is newly produced and has a flux core as well. Since it's still allowed here one can get new batches of solder that don't have that crusty looks, I know what you mean. There is no smell but there is some transparent flux residue afterwards so I clean it …

I am almost certain that the Zenith 486/66 I had back then did not have a heatsink... Nowdays for piece of mind I but heatsinks even on 286 cpus as they get too hot for my taste. Is cooling needed? Doubt it since those machines work after decades but nowdays a piece of thermal tape and a heatsink …
