Re: New DreamBlaster S2 !

I just checked it - some tunes are great, some really show that they are Roland-optimized. Back then I played the game with my Yamaha SW-20PC (OPL4) so now I am curious to hear it again :D Here is one of the better tunes, sadly almost all my saves are late in the game inside dungeons (so music isn't …

Re: New DreamBlaster S2 !

When I played through Lands of Lore some months back, it was with the S1, and it was an amazing experience. I got the X2 when it came out and went back to listen to some Lands of Lore music on it, and honestly, the S1 sounds better, at least on this particular game. Interesting, I'll have to check …

Re: New DreamBlaster S2 !

Well, the S1/S2 are using highly integrated ICs and the soundfont is pre-configured from Dream themselves - nothing can be done in that area AFAIK. I'll be honest: back then I also thought the S1 wasn't anything special - especially since I have a variety of Roland synths at hand. But I got one with …

Re: New DreamBlaster S2 !

I believe it is indeed the smallest db out there - small but full of wonder 😁 At one point I had an OPL4 daughterboard, that's the smallest I've owned but the S2 is almost half: eBay 5$ Yamaha ISA soundcard with wavetable addon

Re: Identify these ISA video cards

Judging from the SAA7195 chip this is a video capture card, probably the video connections are on a missing breakout cable. Does it have a VGA port that works? Could also double as a vga. From the datasheet : SAA7195A is the core device used in many multimedia PC add-on cards that were designed to …

Re: Ancient DOS Games Webshow

It must be a really sad situation thinking that anyone criticizing your public content is someone that "just doesn't like you" , I remember when you first came and asked suggestions/help with your show in the beginning - and even sharing your own personal story/issues - things were different back …

Re: Ancient DOS Games Webshow

Only a tiny fraction of game players back then would've had more advanced sound options for music, which is part of the reason why I stick with the FM Synth, since I COULD engage a wavetable solution, but then not only do I not personally know if it's playing back the way it should sound, but I've …

Re: Ancient DOS Games Webshow

Since there is no MOD playback on the game at all , one should compare to GM because after all the bgm is MIDI. With a good GM device it doesn't sound that bad. Different yes - but not the FM mess. You can't just ignore all the other supported devices and default to the lowest denominator.

Re: Ancient DOS Games Webshow

Just watched the megaman x review... another sound-related grievance. Why are you comparing SNES music with FM synthesis? I have noticed you never use anything else than FM in your reviews , even when vastly superior options are available. I mean you run your games on DOSBox, you might as well setup …

Re: Ancient DOS Games Webshow

I wouldn't classify Lands of Lore as a hard RPG, infact it's one of the most approachable ones out there. EOBs are way harder IMHO. The game also has a great Sound Canvas soundtrack (and a lot others you reviewed) so getting some sort of soundfont player is not a bad idea...

Re: Roland SC-D70

It seems it's the same as SC-8820 but with the digital output parts added and more controls on it. Sadly it does not have the MAP button like the SC-8820 and you need to send SysEx messages to change between 8820/88pro/88/55 maps. Have a look at page 37 at the manual: http://cdn.roland.com/assets/ …

Re: XT/CGA laptop dissection

exactly, these Philips monitors got rebadged a bazillion times: from commodore to Acorn to who knows what other system... all of them are really good monitors so no complains here :) as a sidenote, after quite some searching I managed to get a NTSC 1084S locally (really really really lucky …

Re: XT/CGA laptop dissection

not that it is needed but here is a picture of a 1084S monitor with TTL input suitable for IBM CGA and APPLE computers, straight connections from cga->1084 : http://i.imgur.com/JHz7OODl.jpg The monitor does the brown-fix internally. The same happens with the later 1084S-P1 - that was also used with …
